The Houston Astros have had a horrendous season, but they’ve had the most horrendously entertaining one in Major League Baseball. Whether they’re accidentally hitting their own teammates, trying out innovative, albeit incredibly unsuccessful, bunting techniques, or recreating the play Mark Sanchez made famous, the Astros have continued to impress us with their unimpressive plays game after game. The nightmare of a season is coming to a close for Houston, but that hasn’t stopped them from making even more embarrassing plays. During the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against the Yankees, catcher Matt Pagnozzi attempted to keep tabs on Robinson Cano on the basepaths. Pagnozzi tried to throw down to second base to catch Cano after he took a big lead, but his throw backfired — literally — as he ended up spiking the ball, somehow, and it ended up traveling to the backstop. Lyle Overbay was on third base during the shenanigans, and was able to score on the bizarre throwing error. Ch...

Houston Astros catcher Matt Pagnozzi laughably muffs throw

The 2013 Houston Astros really are the gift that keeps on giving. The same team that has given us the buttslide and an embarrassing error on an outfield collision to lose the game, has now given us one of the worst attempted throws by a catcher. The New York Yankees had the bases loaded in […]

Houston Astros honor retiring Andy Pettitte

The Astros honored retiring Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte in the middle of the fifth inning of Friday night's series opener against New York. Pettitte received a standing ovation at Minute Maid Park, where he pitched from 2004-06 and helped lead Houston to its only World Series appearance in 2005. Astros president Reid Ryan presented him with the framed No. 21 jersey he wore...

Failures getting epic, Astros drop finale to Yanks

The Astros struck out more times than any other team in major league history in a third straight miserable year. Now they'll head toward 2014 with the longest season-ending losing streak in more than a century. Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking homer in a four-run 14th inning, and the New York Yankees sent the Astros to their 15th straight loss with a 5-1 victory Sunday. '...

Astros break Arizona's 3-year-old strikeout record

The Astros have broken the major league record for strikeouts by batters in a season. J.D. Martinez took a called third strike from New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances that ended the ninth inning Sunday, giving Houston 14 strikeouts for the game and 1,530 for the season. Arizona held the previous mark of 1,529 in 2010. Betances struck out the side in the ninth. New York...

Astros fall again, Pettitte completes career

As another dreadful season has bottomed out in the last two weeks, the last-place Houston Astros have become experts at finding new ways to lose. Saturday night was just another example of their futility. Houston catcher Matt Pagnozzi accidentally spiked the ball while trying to throw to second on an attempted pickoff in the sixth inning to allow the go-ahead run to score in a...

Astros lose 13th in a row, drop to 51-109 by Yanks

Even for a team that has grown accustomed to losing in recent years, Houston's recent skid has become difficult to take. David Robertson got the save as Mariano Rivera looked on, and the New York Yankees got a glimpse of their future in a 3-2 win over Houston on Friday night that sent the Astros to their team-record 13th consecutive loss. ''It's been real tough...

Astros lose ratings battle to WNBA, Draw 0.0 Nielsen rating

When I say that NO ONE CARES about the existence of the Houston Astros, I may not be talking hyperbole. We’re getting dangerously close to being literal when we say that no one is interested in the Houston Astros. It isn’t just myself and David Kmiecik on baseball hiatus in 2013; it’s the entire fourth largest market in the United States. Houston DOESN’T CARE about...
