My Sports Rumors:
Not too long we talked about the interest contenders had in Bud Norris but he’s not the only Houston Astros pitcher drawing interest. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported today that the team is also getting phone calls on closer Jose Veras. It’s not really a surprise as teams in contention always need a good reliever and a few of them actually need closers.
Several teams have been looking for closers, including the Tigers and Red Sox, but just about every contending team is considering relief help, possibly now even the Pirates, who have closing star Jason Grilli on the shelf with a forearm issue. Veras has done a serviceable job closing in Houston, and is 0-4 with a 3.12 ERA while converting 18 of 21 saves. (Jon Heyman of CBS Sports)
In my opinion calling Veras just serviceable is a bit of an understatement. Yes, his numbers aren’t the best for a closer but they he is having a career season. In actuality he’s been comparable to many of the closers out there.
When you look at the peripheral numbers like WHIP, BB/9 and SO/BB ratios they’re much better then his career norms. I guess you can say he’s actually risen to the occasion as this is his first chance at being a closer.
My only concern is how much “stress” he can handle. Yes, he’s risen to the occasion and become a decent closer but he does play for the Houston Astros. How would he respond closing for a team like the Pittsburgh Pirates or Boston Red Sox in a playoff game, let alone a late September game, when the pressure is on?

Houston Astros center fielder Jason Maxwell and left fielder J.D. Martinez were both going for the same fly ball when there was a serious miscommunication. It wasn’t a near-no hitter. But it was just as promising.
