The Houston Astros will find out more about the extent of Jed Lowrie's ankle injury Tuesday, and at that point, they will go about determining whether the job belongs to Marwin Gonzalez or if a "help wanted" sign goes up.

General manager Jeff Luhnow said Monday prior to the Astros' 2-0 win over the San Diego Padres that the club would consider an outside option if Lowrie is found to have significant damage.

For now, the shoes of the top hitter on the team from the first half of the season will be filled by Gonzalez, a 23-year-old Rule 5 pick. While he doesn't have the power of Lowrie and his team-leading 14 home runs, he's done well as a hitter for average.

Gonzalez returned from the disabled list Sunday after missing 32 games due to a bruised right heel. In his first two games back, he has reached base five times, raising his average to .286. As a Rule 5 pick, he must stay in the majors the rest of the season barring an injury.

"He did a great job filling in for Jed at the beginning of the season," Luhnow said. "When you have a Rule 5 guy who can play a regular role like that and help your club, that's a huge positive. Normally, you're protecting them from being overexposed. In this case, I don't think we have that.

"Depending upon the severity of Jed's injury and how long he's going to be out, we'll obviously look at other alternatives as well. But for right now, we feel very good about - if it's a short-term injury - Marwin playing every day."

Gonzalez is playing in some pain, as his heel is still sore.

"A week ago it started to feel over 90 percent," Gonzalez said. "It sometimes hurts, but the trainer told me it might feel like that for a long time."
