When the Houston Astros last searched for a manager, they hired the Boston Red Sox's bench coach.

Could they go in that direction again?

As expected, Red Sox bench coach Tim Bogar interviewed Wednesday for Houston's vacant managerial position. He met with Astros owner Jim Crane and general manager Jeff Luhnow in the Tampa area for nearly 2 1/2 hours.

Out of respect for the process, Bogar declined to comment on the interview.

Bogar, 45, has been on the Red Sox's coaching staff for the past four seasons, including in 2009 with Brad Mills, who was hired to be the Astros' manager prior to the 2010 season. Bogar initially served as first base coach before moving up to third base coach and this season to bench coach.

A holdover from former manager Terry Francona's staff, Bogar has had an uneasy relationship with new skipper Bobby Valentine. After Francona's departure, the Red Sox retained Bogar because he was still under contract. Valentine also signed off on keeping Bogar after interviewing other bench coach candidates, including Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo.

Asked Wednesday what set Bogar apart from other candidates, Valentine didn't offer any specifics.

"I can't really remember exactly," he said before the Red Sox's 13-3 loss to the Rays at Tampa Bay. "He was here. He knew the team and the organization, so that was a step up. And I knew him."

The Astros have interviewed four candidates, including interim manager Tony DeFrancesco. Bogar interviewed with the Astros before the 2010 season, when they hired Mills. He also met with the Blue Jays after the 2011 season, who hired former Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell.
