Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland's two triples in the first inning and the Athletics jumped out to a quick lead in a 9-3 victory at Texas on Wednesday night to pull within three games of the AL West-leading Rangers. The Athletics, who had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. They chased Martin Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander got all the way through the batting order. Oakland has won two of three in the series that wraps up with a day game Thursday. After that, the A's go home for a three-game weekend series against Seattle before hosting the Rangers for the final three games of the regular season next week. Stephen Drew had four of Oakland's 16 hits, including a double leading off the game before scoring on Cespedes' triple into the right-center gap.

Athletics set AL record for striking out the most

The Oakland Athletics have set an American League record for striking out the most in a season. Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning Wednesday night at Texas was the team's third of the game and 1,325th this season, one more than the Tampa Bay Rays had in 2007. The A's quickly added to that total when Brandon Moss followed with an inning-ending K. Oakland already...

Feldman starts on short notice for Darvish

ARLINGTON, Texas It's a good thing Rangers pitcher Mark Feldman called it an early night on Monday. On Tuesday, he was pressed into duty against Oakland when scheduled starter Yu Darvish showed up with a stiff neck. "It's not like I went out last night and had 30 beers or anything," said Feldman, who made his last start Sept. 15 against Seattle. "I was fine...

Dallas Braden Yells At The Police Now

You may remember Dallas Braden from such 2010 classics as yelling "get off my mound" at Alex Rodriguez, this awesome t-shirt commemorating the event and somehow throwing a perfect game against the Rays. He pitched 18.0 innings in 2011 before losing the year to shoulder surgery. In March 2012, Braden had a little more surgery for a partial rotator cuff tear. Now that his...

Adams raises flags allowing three homers

ARLINGTON, Texas While the Rangers' overall picture improved with Thursday's 9-7 win over Oakland, concerns about set-up Mike Adams have blossomed. Adams gave up three home runs in the eighth inning, after allowing just one home run all season. In fact, Adams had never given up more than one home run in an appearance his entire career before now. Rangers manager Ron...

Oakland's Moss atones for error with key defensive play

Brandon Moss made a costly two-base error on a hit by Josh Hamilton in the first inning Tuesday, but he more than made up for it later as the Oakland A's edged the Texas Rangers 3-2 in 10 innings. An misplay by Moss in right field led to two unearned runs off Tommy Milone, the only runs the A's left-hander allowed in six innings. Moss erased thoughts of that blunder in...

Ex-Rangers owner Hicks settles over failed project

Former Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks has settled a pair of lawsuits related to a failed multimillion-dollar development project near Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Hicks sought for several years to build a shopping and restaurant district to be called GloryPark Town Center. The project was put on hold in 2008, and Hicks was sued by two separate groups of developers seeking more...

Yu Darvish will start the Texas Rangers' wild-card playoff game on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles. Josh Reddick Hates Fastballs

“Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.” — Pedro CerranoThe archetype of power hitters feasting on fastballs and whiffing on offspeed pitches has long floated within baseball circles. The quotation featured above from the movie Major...

A's hope to make final series with Rangers relevant

Oakland split its key four-game series at Texas, usually a good result at Rangers Ballpark, but for the A's, not a perfect scenario. Oakland had hoped to keep within striking distance of the Rangers in the AL West, but the A's are back to four games behind Texas with six games to play. The final three are against the Rangers. So the A's must hope that the Los Angeles...

Rangers 9, Athletics 7

The two-time defending American League champion Rangers (92-64) have a four-game division lead over the A's with six to play, including three games in Oakland next week...

Mariners-Athletics Preview

The Oakland Athletics are running out of time to catch the AL West leaders. Oakland goes for a fifth straight victory over Seattle on Friday night when it begins a season-ending six-game homestand. After splitting a four-game set with West...
