The Oakland Athletics have an "abundance" of first base options, so they are apparently looking to make a trade to get rid of one of them. The name that has been brought up is Brandon Allen, and the Athletics have contacted the Pirate about a possible trade.Allen is a 25 year old left-handed bat that was drafted in the 5th round of the 2004 draft. He had a pretty decent minor league career hitting .268/.355/.489 in 807 games. He was never a top-tier prospect but always looked like a guy that could develop enough power to find a home in the big leagues someday. He hit 29 home runs in 2008 and 20 in 2009 before reaching AAA for good. In two seasons at AAA since 2009, Allen has 36 home runs in 210 games. He slugged .528 in 2010 and .578 last year in AAA.He does have major league experience, and he hasn't done too much with that experience. In 106 big league games (367 plate appearances), he has a .210/.297/.383 line. He has 128 strikeouts and 40 walks, which isn't en...

Trade Targets: Brandon Allen

The Oakland Athletics are shopping first baseman Brandon Allen, according to Jerry Crasnick, due to their excess number of first base candidates. MLBTR mentions the Pirates as a team that would be a fit for Allen. The connection seems to be based off the fact that the Pirates are looking for a first baseman, but doesn’t suggest that the Athletics have had contact with the Pirates...

The Oakland A's Have Become A Disaster

The Oakland Athletics are currently in talks with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes. If they sign Gomes, I think will have officially hopped off the Billy Beane bandwagon, because the team's offense right now is an absolute horror show. Assuming Gomes is in the fold, Beane has four outfielders to play the corners alongside Coco Crisp: Gomes, Collin Cowgill, Josh Reddick, and...

Oakland Acquires Seth Smith From Colorado

The Oakland Athletics continued to demolish their pitching staff by trading starting pitchers Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman to the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Seth Smith. Smith gives Oakland a solid outfielder and a legitimate cleanup hitter for a team lacking in offense. Smith has hit .296 in his career at Coors Field and batted .257 on the road so expect his average to...

The Athletics have agreed to sign Jonny Gomes, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported yesterday that the A's were nearing a deal with the Petaluma, California native. Josh Reddick came back to Massachusetts on Thursday night to be honored as the Red Sox's Rookie of the Year for 2011. In an otherwise comfortable return, the only wrinkle was that Boston is no longer his hometown during baseball season.
