Off The Bench:
The 2013 season will be a strange one for Atlanta Braves fans. With Chipper Jones no longer manning third base and hitting in the three hole, the organization has seen some overturn. Newly acquired brothers Upton promise to bring a new spark to the outfield and Chris Johnson and Juan Francisco will platoon to try to provide some of the production of the departed future hall of famer. After the infield fly call (and the total ineptitude of that inning in a Wild Card game that shouldn’t have meant as much as it did) derailed the 2012 Braves season, the Braves appear ready to make the playoffs again, but look to avoid the beast that is the one game Wild Card playoff.
Andrelton Simmons (SS)
Jason Heyward (RF)
Justin Upton (LF)
Freddie Freeman (1B)
Brian McCann (C)
BJ Upton (CF)
Dan Uggla (2B)
Chris Johnson/Juan Francisco (3B)

With Brian McCann out with a shoulder injury, Gattis will backup Gerald Laird, though with Laird nursing a left calf strain and...
This is my favorite Brave, Jonny Venters. That is his left elbow. Apparently right now it is hurt.
I don't like this.
Venters left game with left-elbow sprain, according to #Braves
— David O'Brien (@ajcbraves) March 26, 2013
At the time he was placed on DL last summer, Venters said the elbow had "flared up" from time to time previously during season.
That familiar face over at third base is gone.
Time for the Atlanta Braves to go through another changing of the guard.
Goodbye, Chipper Jones.

Paul Maholm extended his streak of not allowing an earned run to 24 2-3 innings as the Atlanta Braves beat a split squad of Houston Astros 2-0 on Thursday in the final Grapefruit League game for both teams.
