Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke is the first to admit that he almost assumes a win when John Axford takes over in the ninth inning with a lead.

"I think we do (take it for granted) because he's been doing it a year straight," Roenicke said. "We realize that the ninth inning is not as easy for other clubs."

When Axford saved the Brewers' 9-6 victory Tuesday night over the Houston Astros, it completed a one-year circle against the Astros. On that date in 2011, Axford began a string of consecutive regular-season saves that reached 47 on Tuesday.

Converting 47 in a row tied Axford with Brad Lidge for fourth place on the all-time list. Next up is Jose Valverde with 51.

Oddly enough, lefty Randy Wolf was the starter for the Brewers in both save No. 1 and 47 in a row for Axford.

"It is remarkable," said Wolf. "There's only a handful of guys in all of baseball that can really put a game away like that. When you're the opposing team and a guy like that comes in, you kind of see the balloon pop.

"He's got the right temperament. He had a great mentor (Trevor Hoffman) for one year that really helped out, and saw how it's supposed to be done; mentally how it's got to be done.

"Physically, he has everything you need. If you have the mental side of that, it takes you to another level."

The Brewers had no need to call on Axford in Wednesday's series finale against the Astros, as Houston earned a 7-5 win.
