Over the long course of a baseball season games tend to run together. It takes a lot to stand out. Tuesday's game had a lot. There was Homer Bailey's brilliant start. There was Billy Hamilton's first stolen base -- in a critical moment against the best catcher going. There was the big hit from Todd Frazier. And there was Aroldis Chapman striking out the side for the save with 103 mph gas and nasty sliders. It added up to a 1-0 victory for the Reds over the St. Louis Cardinals before a crowd of 20219 at Great American Ball Park. The victory moves the Reds to within 1 1/2 games of the Cards in the National League Central. "That was an outstanding game" Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It was playoff-type atmosphere. I told these guys hopefully we get used to that." The Reds are guaranteed a split in the four-game series thus their seven-series losing streak to the Cards is over. "That's a moot point" Baker said. "We can't b...

Video: Watch Homer Bailey snag a line drive right back up the middle

Your browser does not support iframes. Homer Bailey pitched a gem Tuesday night against the Cardinals to earn his 10th win of the season. However, he almost didn't make it out of the second inning. Check it out as Bailey escaped a scare in the top of the second when Yadier Molina nearly took his head off by a line drive. Fortunately, Bailey was able to get his glove...

Billy Hamilton picks up his first MLB Stolen Base (and more, MLB Twitter Roundup)

Hamilton made his first major league appearance last night as a pinch-runner and he snagged his first of what will be many stolen bases for the kid, and he did it off a pretty good catcher in Yadier Molina who has five Gold Gloves to his resume. You can get used to it, Hamilton had 175 steals last year. Can’t say we didn’t warn ya! The Reds prospect would later come around to...

The curious sports journalism dichotomy

Late Monday night, I came across two interesting, yet polar opposite takes on the current sports media landscape. One paints the picture of a baseball beat writer, who grinds out a six month, 162 game season with a team, working hard to get information for his bosses and customers, and when he dares tread into analysis, is not only dismissed, but demeaned by a professional athlete...

Hamilton's run, Chapman's fastball give Reds speed

Billy Hamilton lowered his shoulders and got into high gear, taking off for second base on Seth Maness' pitch. Whoosh! He was there. And moments later, he was dashing home with the only run of the game, one that would end with a little more radar-blurring speed. Closer Aroldis Chapman jogged out of the Cincinnati Reds' bullpen, reached the mound at leisurely pace, and finished...

Is Cincinnati Reds speedster Billy Hamilton the secret weapon to win the NL Central

Hamilton swipes one of 155 bases in 2012Credit: AP/Ben Twingley MLB September call ups (when teams can expand to beyond a 25-man roster to anyone on their 40-man roster) can always add a weapon or two to contenders, but usually aren’t game changers.  The Cincinnati Reds, however, have a potential serious game changer in 22-year-old prospect OF Billy Hamilton, who was called up...

Hamilton steals base as Reds win

The dirt-smudged base leaned on the floor in front of Billy Hamilton's locker. An inscription in black ink noted the importance: ''MLB Debut 9/3/13.'' Some debut! The speedy outfielder who outran everything in the minors got his first stolen base in the majors on Tuesday night, and it decided a game with playoff implications. Hamilton swiped second and came...

Billy Hamilton steals first career base off of Yadier Molina

Cincinnati Reds prospect Billy Hamilton is fast - really fast. He's probably the fastest man in baseball today. He was a September call-up by the Reds, and got into Tuesday night's game with the Cardinals as a pinch runner in the seventh inning. Hamilton, who stole 155 bases last year at an 80.7% clip and stole "just" 75 bases this year at an 83% clip, came in...

Hamilton steals base, Reds beat Cardinals 1-0

Speedy Billy Hamilton got his first major league steal Tuesday night and came around on Todd Frazier's double in the seventh inning, sending the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 victory, their second straight over the St. Louis Cardinals. Hamilton set a professional record by swiping 155 bases in the minors last year. He got an ovation when he made his big league debut as a pinch runner...

The Obviousness of Billy Hamilton

“I didn’t send him out there to paint,” Dusty Baker would say. “It was no secret.” One of the things about strategic maneuvers in baseball is that they’re usually evident ahead of time. There aren’t many equivalents to, say, a corner blitz. If a manager goes to the bullpen, the other team sees the new […]

23 games to go; it’s time to get hot

With 23 games to go in the regular season, the Reds are 3.5 games back on the NLC and lead the second wildcard spot by 7.5 over the Nationals. It’s not exactly sewn up yet, but it’s felt pretty likely that our boys will be in the post-season for a while now. The real question has been: then what? The first wildcard spot has belonged to the Cardinals for as long as the Reds have...

Reds hit Wainwright hard again, beat Cardinals 7-2

Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto homered as Cincinnati roughed up Adam Wainwright for the second start in a row Monday, leading Mat Latos and the Reds to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game series between the NL Central rivals. Latos (14-5) gave up four hits, including a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly by Matt Holliday, in his first complete game...

Adams' HRs send Cardinals over Reds 5-4 in 16

Matt Adams' second homer sent St. Louis to a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 16 innings on Wednesday night, protecting the Cardinals' hold on second place in the NL Central. Adams broke an 0-for-17 slump by connecting in the 14th. After St. Louis let that lead get away, he homered again off Logan Ondrusek (3-1), ending the Reds' longest game of the season. The...

Adams' HRs send Cardinals over Reds

Matt Adams emerged from his deep slump and saved the St. Louis Cardinals from another costly loss. Adams broke an 0-for-17 slump and hit a pair of homers in extra innings on Wednesday night, the last one in the 16th for a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that protected the Cardinals' hold on second place in the NL Central. Nice timing. ''My rhythm's been off...
