Two Baltimore Orioles’ players are taking the mound and stepping up to the plate for a cause this season. Pitcher Darren O’Day and first baseman Chris Davis will make performance-based donations throughout the 2013 MLB season to Luke’s Wings. Luke’s Wings is a non-profit Wounded Warrior Transportation Assistance Program (W.W.T.A.P.) founded in 2008 which is dedicated to supporting service members wounded in battle. Luke’s Wings addresses the need for families to be with their wounded service members and works to fund travel for families to be near their loved ones.  Money raised by Luke’s Wings also assists families with costs associated with the service member’s hospitalization, recovery services, and the logistics of family visits. O’Day will donate $40 for each of his pitched strikeouts and Davis will donate $100 for every home run he hits to Luke’s Wings in order to support their efforts uniting wounded military heroes with their families. The Baltimore Orioles official Twitter account, @Orioles, recently announced the partnership between O’Day and Davis and tweets updates when @DODay56 (O’Day) racks up strikeouts and @ChrisDavis_19 (Davis) hits home runs. Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles Luke’s Wings also partners with other non-profit organizations to provide discounted accommodations, meals, attractions, and services to the families. Their mission is to ensure families and loved ones are together during difficult times and also to encourage and motivate recovery. Luke’s Wings was operated on a solely volunteer and donation basis from 2008 to 2011. In 2011, Luke’s Wings increased the scope of their mission by providing transport for loved ones of Texas Veterans during major life events and support for Veterans in Hospice Care. These additions to the mission allow for family support during serious life events and the presence of loved ones during end of life care. In 2012, Luke’s Wings was requested to provide emergency transportation for families and loved ones of special operators injured on missions. Luke’s Wings handles the emergency transportation for families of injured Special Operations Command (S.O.C.O.M.) operators as a major part of the S.O.C.O.M. Care Coalition. As of 2012, Luke’s Wings has raised more than $1,000,000.00 and aided more than 600 wounded warrior families, Texas Veteran families, and Veterans in Hospice Care. Families can request travel here on the Luke’s Wings website. From 2008 to 2012, most of the Luke’s Wings’ funding came from internally organized fundraisers and individual donations. Luke’s Wings also desires to partner with corporate sponsors and other organizations in support of their cause. Donations can also be made to Luke’s Wings on their website.   Bonfire Impact is proud to partner with Luke’s Wings. To learn more visit the Luke’s Wings website.
