According to a Major League source close to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Baltimore Orioles have placed left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez on trade waivers on Tuesday. Cafardo adds that Gonzalez could be another relief candidate for the Red Sox if the Orioles are inclined to trade him.
The Sox are looking for a bullpen piece – preferebly a left-hander to go along with Daniel Bard. Gonzalez would be a good choice, but there’s no indication that the Orioles would entertain a deal or whether they put him on trade waivers as most teams routinely do.
The Red Sox are unlikely to be the only ones who may put in a waiver claim. Carfardo says that it would appear that some of the contending teams would have some level of interest.
