The Frontier League has reported that the Baltimore Orioles have purchased the contract of the Normal CornBelters No.1 pick Casey Upperman. According to Baseball Reference, Upperman was originally draft by the Atlanta Braves in the 24th round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft from Notre Dame Prep and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 47th round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft from Yavapai College. In 2010 Upperman played for rookie Missoula and low-A Yakima in the Diamondbacks organization. He appeared in 17 games, struck out 23 and walked 19 in 25 innings. Unfortunately, Tommy John surgery derailed his professional career. Two years removed from surgery, and after a short stint playing for the CornBelters, he's back in affiliated ball. CornBelter's manager Brooks Carey couldn't be any happier for the second opportunity that Upperman is receiving. “Casey is very deserving of this opportunity,” said CornBelters field manager, Brooks Carey. “It is always satisfying as a manager to be a part of helping a young player get a second chance, which is the case with Upperman.” “The CornBelters organization wish him all the best.” Upperman immediately impressed at the 2013 Frontier League tryouts. In a report supplied by the league summarizing the draft, Carey's "stuff" made him standout from the other 160 pitchers in attendance. "He was the best pitcher of the 160 pitchers we saw so we drafted him. He has great stuff and we are very happy to have him joining the Normal CornBelters organization" In eight appearances this year, he has put up the best numbers of his short career. As a closer for the CornBelters, Upperman appeared in eight games, while saving four of them. He walked eight but struck out 17 which equates to 13.5 Strikeouts Per Nine innings (Statistics courtesy Baseball Reference). Upperman has already seen action for the Orioles affiliate Delmarva. In two appearances he has surrendered four runs and seven hits in two innings (Statistics courtesy MiLB.com). No one ever said this game was easy.
