(Photo credit: Jamie Squire/Getty Images) Baltimore Orioles top prospect SP Dylan Bundy will have Tommy John surgery tomorrow in Florida to repair a partial ligament tear in his elbow. Bundy has not pitched since March due to what the team called “elbow discomfort”. He got a PRP shot from Dr. James Andrews in late April, which seemed to help, at least for a while. He started throwing again a few weeks ago, but in a side session earlier this week he felt the “discomfort” again. Tommy John surgery typically means about a 12 month recovery. Bundy was widely considered to be the best pitching prospect in all of baseball entering 2013. He was the 4th overall pick in the 2011 MLB first year player draft out of Owasso High School in Oklahoma. He also was the first baseball player to ever win the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Award (2011). Bundy made his MLB debut on September 23rd of last season in a relief role, pitching .2 perfect innings against the Boston Red Sox. He was expected to be a large part of the Orioles pitching plan for this year, and their rotation is struggling as a result of him not being available. According to Bundy’s agent, the right hander is “down . . . but he should be able to heal quickly. Not many people [are] in better shape”. While Tommy John surgery is never good news, Bundy is only 20 years old, and in recent years the recipients of the surgery have a very high recovery rate, some even coming back stronger than before, such as Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg. Bundy has a career minor league ERA of 2.08 and a WHIP of .916 in 23 starts. He also has a 4.25 strikeout to walk ratio. The big league club will play game 3 of their 4 game set against the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards tonight at 7:10PM EST, assuming the thunderstorms in the area cooperate. The teams have split the first two games in the series. Jason Hammel (7-4) will take the bump for the Birds, facing off against Scott Kazmir (4-4) of the Tribe.
