An intriguing match up this evening at Petco Park where Padres ace-on-the-market Jake Peavy will go up against Phillies pitching prospect Antonio Bastardo who will be making his Major League debut. Phillies skipper Cholly Manuel admits that they didn't see a lot of the young Dominican this spring because their rotation was mostly set, but adds the kid has some good stuff, "He sits around 90 to 91 mph and has good command of his slider along with his changeup and fastball."

Peavy pitching against the Phillies on June 2nd is a bit of an anomaly considering he was traded to the Phillies on June 1st for Jason Donald and Kyle Kendrick. That is, if you believe the always reliable Wikipedia.org! Check the screen grab below.

Peavy for Donald and Kendrick? That'd be a Dave Roberts-esque steal. Huge!

Most expect Bastardo's stint with the big club to be a short one until Ruben Amaro Jr. can decide on how to permanently fill the void left by Brett Myers injury. But the opportunity to show what he's capable is a big one for Bastardo who has been impressive to this point between double and triple A with a 1.89 ERA in 47.2 innings and the exciting 51-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. As Charlie said, first pitch strikes will be important for the youngster.

Peavy, who will be going for his fourth straight win, will have to deal with more than just the Phillies' imposing line up. The San Diego Union-Tribune tells of his recent ankle troubles.

Peavy suffered an inflamed tendon behind the bone on the inside of his right ankle while running the bases against the Cubs on May 22. The tendon began bothering Peavy toward the end of his most recent start May 27 in Arizona and he was given an extra day's rest before Tuesday's start.

The Phillies faithful should represent well again this evening. And if the kid ever gets a start in Philly we're recommending the fan group go by the name of Bastardo's Bastards. Heck, maybe we'll even see the Philly transplanted Bastards show up tonight at Petco.

10:05 PM ET start time so get your footie pajamas out.

Oh, you crazy wikipedians, you.
