Tuesday night’s game was very different from the first 22 the Pirates played in April. It featured plenty of offense along with poor pitching and defense. While it was nice to see the Pirate bats stay hot, the final result wasn’t what they were looking for.

For the first time all season, really, the Pirates’ pitching did them in. Charlie Morton didn’t look bad initially…he allowed a run in the first as a result of a leadoff double, but recovered to put up a zero. He loaded the bases in the third but got out of it, and allowed an un-earned run in the fourth thanks to a Clint Barmes error. Morton really fell apart in the fifth, though. After a single and a walk, David Freese jacked a 3-run shot…then the Cards tacked on two more hits for another run to knock Morton out. His final line: 4.1 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 2 walks, 5 K’s. Just a bad night for Chuck.

Up until that Freese HR, though, the Pirates were in the game. Jose Tabata remained hot at the plate and picked up his first Bucco Blast of the season to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead in the third. Surprisingly, the offense even gave the Bucs a shot to remain in the game once the Cards went up big in the fifth. Pedro Alvarez–again!–homered in the seventh to make it 7-4, and the Pirates put up a 3-spot in the 8th with two walks and three singles (one by Alvarez off lefty specialist J.C. Romero).

Unfortunately, the bullpen was not up to par and allowed the Cards to keep a safe distance. Jared Hughes allowed three runs in two innings of relief, and Tony Watson allowed another. Three of those four runs were unearned because of some very shoddy defense–the Pirates made an awful FOUR errors on the night. Morton, the defense, and the bullpen all had a bad night at once, and it cost the Bucs. That’s a shame considering they actually managed to score 7 runs.

On the bright side, Pedro is still hot (up to .222 and 6 homers), as is Tabata. Neil Walker was on base three times, Andrew McCutchen was on base twice, and even Rod Barajas chipped in with a double. The bats are starting to wake up.

Cardinals 10, Pirates 7 / Box / 2012 Record: 10-13 / Next: Wednesday, at Cardinals, 8:15

MVP: Tabata (+.180) / LVP: Morton (-.448) / Key play: Freese’s 3-run HR
