The members of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance have announced the winners of their 2011 Walter Johnson Award, recognizing the top pitcher in each league. The BBA has named Detroit Tigers righty Justin Verlander and LA Dodgers southpaw Clayton Kershaw as Pitchers of the Year for the recently-concluded campaign.
Verlander was the unanimous selection for the award, having been the top selection on each of the 21 ballots that were cast, easily outdistancing Anaheim starter Jered Weaver. Weaver was a distant second, finishing 80 points behind Verlander… New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia came in third in the balloting.
The tresults were a bit closer on the National League side. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw beat out Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay 137-112. Kershaw received 15 first place nods, while Halladay garnered eight. Halladay’s teammate, Cliff Lee, finished third in the voting.
