BBDP MVP: Tyler Austin. It was tough to knock Mikey O’Brien and Craig Heyer out of the running, but Austin earned it today.

Ray Kruml
Ramon Ortiz pitched 5 innings and let up 3 ER, while Jason Bulger let up 4 earned in 1 IP.

JR Murphy: 0/3, R, BB (.241). Slumping a bit these past couple of games.
Neil Medchill: 3/3, 3 R, HR (2), 3 RBI, BB, SB (1) (.323). He’s old for this level, but you never know when something can just click and a player figures it out.

Andy Pettitte: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 K, faced 13 batters (1.29 ERA). Looked very good again.

Gary “Sanchize” Sanchez: 2/5, R (.324). Was 0/3 to start the game, got hits in each of his last two at bats.
Ben Gamel: 1/5, R, K (.229)
Tyler Austin: 2/4, R, HR (3), 3 RBI, BB (.438). Now slugging 1.031, with an OBP of .531, OPS of 1.582. Small sample sizes, but that’s ridiculous. He has 3 homeruns in just 7 games.
Casey Stevenson: 1/4, R, K (.321)
Francisco Arcia: 2/4, R, HR, RBI (.300). Gary Sanchez was the DH today, Arcia was the catcher.

Pedro Guerra: 1 IP, zeros (1.29 ERA)

Yankees give Cano Posada’s locker, bigger leadership role

For the Yankees, locker placement is meaningful. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have two of the more prominent lockers in the room and for a long time Jorge Posada was said to have an important spot too right in front of the no access door essentially serving a a fence between the media and where the Yankees can go and relax. That locker now belongs to Robinson Cano. “Being...

Pettitte throws 47 pitches in latest MiLB start

Andy Pettitte made his latest minor league start on Sunday and said he felt good after throwing 47 pitches and remains on track to return to the Bronx on May 5th or 10th. “Right now, I feel good. I feel strong,” Pettitte told Adam Berry of MLB.com. “I need to get to where I can get into a game and feel comfortable where I can get into an inning where I may have to throw...

Garcia pitching for a rotation spot as well

There has been a lot of talk about Phil Hughes potentially losing his rotation spot once Andy Pettitte comes back, but it is important to remember that Freddy Garcia is also pitching for a job. Garcia had an uncharacteristically good spring, but got roughed up in his first start of the season primarily due to a lack of command. He’ll be back out on the mound today and another...

Looking Like Andy's Targeting a Mid May Return

From Mark Hale:The way things looked for Andy Pettitte after yesterday’s minor league outing, it seemed possible he would need just two more starts before rejoining the Yankees. Pettitte’s return to the major league seemed imminent, meaning Phil Hughes might get just two more turns to solve his woes. Both Pettitte and Hughes, however, will be getting more time. Following...

Mark Teixeira once again off to a slow start

With a career OPS of just .768, April is by far Mark Teixeira‘s worst month of his career. Last season he reversed that by putting up a .941 OPS in the first month, but that hasn’t lasted long as he is once again off to a slow start, putting up a lowly .639 OPS so far through the Yankees first nine games. “I’ve gotten used to it,” Teixeira told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com...

Mark Teixeira Needs To Adjust His Approach or His Career Could be Over

The Yankees have started the season 4-4 despite the fact they have been without the expected quality pitching of ace CC Sabathia (he of the new five year, $122 million extension), and without any production from middle of the order hitters Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira. Robbie will come around soon, but it is Teixeira’s lack of production which should be very worrisome to Yankee...

Where Does Derek Jeter’s Ascent Up the Hit Chart Take Him?

One of the early surprises of the season is the offensive output of Derek Jeter. Going into tonight’s matchup against Minnesota, Jeter is hitting a robust .366 with 2 HRs and 6 RBI. The slow bat that turned him into a below league average hitter the last couple of years has disappeared. I was ready to see him get his 3,000th hit and start the countdown of when his contract will...

New York Yankees: Wilson vs. Hughes

Mandalatv . . 1,272×954 (691 KB) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) If you looked at Kuroda and Santana’s career stats vs. the active hitters prior to yesterday’s game, the Yankee win was already a lock. Not taking anything away from Kuroda, but...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 11, Angels 5

Some sites give you their immediate takes on just-completed games. I believe in taking a moment (or full night) to compose my thoughts. The New York Yankees last night won the rubber game of their first series with the Pujolsian Edition of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. None of the games were particularly great, nor is there much to extrapolate based on the performances we saw...

This latest episode of the Lady At The Bat Podcast was recorded before the Yankees won the rubber game of their weekend series against the Angels last night. They start a three game series against the Twins tonight and travel to Boston this weekend for their first meeting of the season with the Red Sox. Mike Passeri of New York Yankees Update joins me on the podcast to talk Yankees...

BBDP April 13th: Tyler Austin continues to mash

Triple-A Empire State: W 7-5 vs Buffalo. W: Whitley (1-0), S: Whelan (1) Kevin Russo: 1/6, R, 2B (.280) Ramiro Pena: 1/5, R, 2B, RBI (.192) Dewayne Wise: 4/5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, K (.529). That’s right, he’s batting .529 in 17 at bats. Small sample size, but boy is that ever impressive Brandon Laird: 0/3, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K (.194). Does seem like he’s being more patient this...
