The Seattle Mariners still have some time before they have to decide which pitcher will start for them Sunday in Yankee Stadium.

It could be Blake Beavan. It's his turn in the rotation, but he took a nasty line drive off his right elbow in Monday's start.

He said he had trouble sleeping with the elbow elevated Monday night, and on Tuesday, the elbow and forearm were heavily wrapped. Even so, it was easy to see the prodigious amount of swelling in Beavan's right arm.

On Monday, manager Eric Wedge hinted that Hisashi Iwakuma might get the start if Beavan can't go. On Tuesday, Wedge said that while Iwakuma remained a possibility, there was at least a chance that the club might dip into the minor league system to fill the vacancy, should one occur.

Iwakuma is already on the roster. He pitched well in three innings of relief Monday, and his arm is the most stretched out of any of the Seattle relievers, so it's the easiest call for the Mariners to make, should the need arise.

"I liked the way he used his pitches," Wedge said of Iwakuma, "and I liked the way he threw all of his pitches."

For the moment, however, Wedge would like to go with Beavan, if possible.

"We're going to still hold out hope," Wedge said of a possible Beavan start. "He feels a lot better today. He definitely has more flexibility, more movement."

Seattle's Tuesday starter, Kevin Millwood, remained winless on the season, allowing five runs in five innings during a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
