The Pirates imploded for a second straight day–this time in more spectacular fashion–as they lost in a horrific blowout to the Cubs, 14-4.

Erik Bedard started off the game pretty well, going through a few relatively quick innings (for him, anyway) and getting a lot of K’s. After an ugly trip through the order the first time around, the offense started to pick things up against journeyman Cubs starter Justin Germano. Starling Marte had a nice RBI single to bring in Clint Barmes, and Michael McKenry brought home a run with a force-out one inning later after the Bucs had loaded the bases. Everything seeemed fine.

Then, all of a sudden, it was not fine. Bedard allowed a one out single and walk in the bottom of the fourth, then grooved a pitch to Darwin Barney after falling behind in the count. Barney crushed it well into the bleachers for a 3-run homer, turning the game around and putting the Cubs on top by two.

Marte reached on a bunt single in the fifth, but was doubled off when he lost track of Alex Presley‘s fly ball on a botched hit and run. The Cubs kept adding to the momentum, putting the first two on base in the bottom of the inning for Anthony Rizzo…who tanked another three-run homer to bust the game open.

Things just snowballed after that. Bedard gave up some more hits, then Chris Resop came in and gave up more hits. Starlin Castro blasted one to center somewhere in there, and the Cubs led 13-2. They tallied nine in the inning.

After that, the only entertainment left was to see which Cubs would be traded. More and more Cubs left the game and hugged teammates in the dugout after every inning — eventually we learned Reed Johnson and Paul Maholm went to Atlanta, and Geovany Soto went to Texas.

As ugly as it was, blowouts happen and I refuse to get worked up about what really boiled down to one nightmare inning. I do worry about Bedard, but his first couple innings were encouraging at least. We’ll turn our attention to the trade deadline on Tuesday and see how the Bucs can bounce back in game 2 at Wrigley.

Cubs 14, Pirates 4 / Box / 2012 Record: 58-44 / Next: Tuesday, at Cubs, 8:05

MVP: Marte (+.121) / LVP: Bedard (-.512) / Key play: Barney’s HR
