PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Carlos Beltran hit a two-run double in a four-run third inning, Yadier Molina and John Jay added RBI doubles in the fourth and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the New York Mets 12-4 Wednesday. The starters in the top five slots in the Cardinals' batting order combined to hit 5-for-10 with four doubles and seven RBIs, and St. Louis finished with 14 hits. Mets scheduled starter Zack Wheeler was scratched because of a mild oblique strain sustained while swinging a bat in the cage during pregame workouts. Starter Darin Gorski allowed four runs, three hits and three walks in two-plus innings. Cardinals starter Lance Lynn gave up two runs and four hits in two innings, including John Buck's two-run homer in the second. Michael Wacha, the Cardinals' top selection in last June's amateur draft, followed and allowed one hit in three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

St. Louis Cardinals: Injuries are already becoming a problem for Cardinals

For the second  consecutive day, the St. Louis Cardinals' offense pounded the baseball all over the yard in route to an easy 8-2 victory over the Miami Marlins in Jupiter, Florida on Thursday afternoon. The offense has looked good thus far across the board and rookie Oscar Taveras was the story on Thursday. The high-profile prospect blasted a grand slam home run to help the...

Prospect Wacha fitting right in with Cardinals

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has seen all he needs to see from pitching prospect Michael Wacha. "I think that guy right now can pitch in the big leagues," Molina said. "That's the way I look at it. He's got great stuff. He has great presence on the mound. I feel that guy can pitch right now in the big leagues. He has great command...

Bullpen should again be strength for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. Mitchell Boggs has no problem saying it. He thinks the Cardinals bullpen could be good. Real good. And after he backed up his talk a year ago with a strong personal season, those doubting him might want to think again. Boggs made headlines last winter when he said he could compete with anybody in the game and predicted a big season from himself on the mound. He then...

Why the St. Louis Cardinals should encourage Yadier Molina to play first base in World Baseball Classic

If you were lucky enough to be in attendance for the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-2 Grapefruit League victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon in Jupiter, Florida, you would have seen an odd sight. The best defensive catcher in baseball, Yadier Molina, started the game at first base. Molina has dabbled at first base on rare occasions in the past as a late inning replacement...

Carpenter adjusting to life at second base

JUPITER, Fla. Matt Carpenter wasn't sure how to react when he moved from second base back over to first base for the final few innings of Sunday's spring training game. Carpenter has concentrated so hard on learning to play second base this spring that playing his more normal spot of first base almost seemed too easy. "It's funny," Carpenter said. "...

St. Louis Cardinals: Can the Cardinals fill the holes in the starting rotation?

The St. Louis Cardinals have made some magical runs the last two baseball seasons.  One ending with a World Series Championship and the other, a disappointing National League Championship Series loss to the eventual World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals are poised to make another run in 2013, but there are some questions in their starting rotation. The news...

When does rooting for prospects cross the line?

I don’t have a deep thought for the day. It is more of an honest question, posed directly to fans of teams other than the St. Louis Cardinals. Ideally, I’d like to hear from those who closely follow successful organizations that have also recently been among those ranked as having some of the best collections of prospects in the game. Q: When your team’s system was its fullest...

Cardinals announce 2013 broadcast schedule

ST. LOUIS The St. Louis Cardinals today announced their television schedule for the 2013 season. In their 20th season with the team, FOX Sports Midwest is scheduled to carry 150 games in its third full season as the exclusive local TV home of the Cardinals. Ten regular season games are currently scheduled to be carried as part of Major League Baseballs national television packages...

Spring Training: Up and Running St. Louis Cardinals

Oh my, how time does fly. It is that time of year again! Pitchers and catchers have reported, and now teams have started playing spring training games. If one is particularly caught in the moment, one might be worried that the Cardinals are 0-2 so far in spring training play. But since that’s only two games, and spring training results have little to no correlation to regular season...

Wacha Wacha Wow

The St. Louis Cardinals have shown offensive prowess over the last week, racking up the run support and showing midseason form at the plate.  The offense was impressive, but may have been overshadowed by the presence of pitching prospect Michael Wacha. Wacha took the mound behind starter Lance Lynn on Wednesday against the Mets.  The young prospect was making his second appearance...

Carpenter, Lohse and Dave Duncan’s impact

In several recent tweets, ESPN’s Buster Olney was sharing the thoughts of a talent evaluator offering his opinions as to why Kyle Lohse is still unsigned. The following quote comes from the evaluator with the conclusion apparently Olney’s. “When’s the last time you saw a pitcher leave St. Louis and do well elsewhere?” The Dave Duncan effect. With the recent announcement...

Player Profile #56: Allen Craig | 1B, OF | STL

In terms of raw talent, Allen Craig is an exciting player in fantasy. His biggest strength is his elite contact skills, though by “contact skills” I don’t just mean his ability to put the bat on the ball. There are many players who swing and miss less than Craig (his 6.9% swinging strike rate was just 53rd-best of the 193 players to register at least 400 PA last year), but not...

Mets Scratch Zack Wheeler Due To A Mild Carlos Beltran Strain?

Andy Martino of the Daily News is hearing that Zack Wheeler will be scratched from his start today because of an oblique injury that happened while hitting in cage…. Wheeler has confirmed the injury and the Mets are calling it a mild strain… Darin Gorski will start today’s game instead of Wheeler today… This begs the question… We are using the DH in spring games, why was...
