Two signings happened this afternoon that weren't really worth a post on their own, but were significant in the grand scheme of things. The Mariners agreed to a one-year deal with Jason Bay, and the Diamondbacks agreed to a one-year deal with Eric Chavez. Bay will make less than a million dollars (as expected), while Chavez will make $3 million in Arizona in 2013. I wrote about Bay potentially signing with the Mariners earlier this afternoon, essentially saying that it's a PR move that doesn't make the team better in the long-term and only has the possibility to enhance Bay's value for next offseason where he looks for a bigger payday. The Mariners likely won't compete in the AL West with or without Jason Bay on their team, and it just seems weird for the team to commit to him instead of going with a younger player that might contribute for more than just the 2013 season. The Chavez signing is more interesting, because along with the Jeff Keppinger signing by the White Sox earlier today, it takes another third baseman off of the market with both the Yankees and Phillies looking for a solution at the position. The top tier at third is now down to essentially Mark Reynolds and Kevin Youkilis, a pair of veterans with considerable question marks. With both Philadelphia and New York looking to contend in 2013, both are running out of potential options at third base this year, and might need to promote from within or look at the trade market. In that respect, the Phillies are in better shape than the Yankees due to the presence of prospect Cody Asche, who is rumored to take over in 2013. The Yankees need a more long-term solution due to the severity of Alex Rodriguez's hip injury, and their farm system lacks a plus player at the hot corner. Back to Chavez for a minute, He'll be 35 on Friday, and the 113 games he played in 2012 with the Yankees were the most he's played in a seasons since 2006 (seriously) with the A's. He's not a plus defender at the position like he was in his prime in Oakland, but if he's healthy, he could definitely provide value at third for the Diamondbacks, who got no production at the position last year from Ryan Roberts. But Chavez is very similiar to Chris Johnson, who started at third in the second half for Arizona, in the fact that neither can hit lefties. That's not the ideal situation for a platoon at all, and I'm not sure the Diamondbacks are better off paying both Chavez and Johnson than just rolling with the younger Johnson and spending their money elsewhere.
