Grab some pine, meat. Or at least a fishing pole.

Former Giants catcher Bengie Molina has retired, according to Comcast SportsNet’s Andrew Baggarly.

The 37-year-old Molina played for 13 seasons, with four of those campaigns wearing the Orange and Black. All told, he batted .274/.307/.411 (0.718 OPS) with 144 HR and 711 RBI.

A model of consistency at the plate, Molina did some of his best work as a San Francisco Giant. Fifty-eight (40%) of his 144 career homers came while he was with the Giants.

On May 7, 2007, in a 9-4 victory over the New York Mets, Molina blasted two home runs in one inning, becoming the first Giant since Willie McCovey (1973) to accomplish such a feat.

Molina had his own blog, called Behind The Mask, which became very popular in his days as a Giant. In one particular post, Molina lamented the treatment he got from ESPN, calling the network’s sarcastic portrayal of him as a verrrrrrry slow runner a “cheap shot.”

Aside from his days with the Giants, Molina spent the rest of his career in the American League, playing for the Angels (1998-2005), Blue Jays (2006), and Rangers (2010), where he was traded by the Giants midway through the season in exchange for Michael Main and Chris Ray. The Giants and Rangers would wind up in the World Series, guaranteeing Molina of a ring no matter which team won.

He also faced the Giants in the 2002 World Series as a member of the Anaheim Angels.

Molina won two Gold Glove awards (in 2002 and 2003) and appeared in 42 post-season games during his career.

I’ll always have fond memories of Molina, who was a fantastic baseball player and wonderful gentleman. Good luck and happy retirement, Bengie!
