NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Cardinals search for an assistant hitting coach has apparently finished with a familiar name. A source confirmed Thursday morning that Bengie Molina, former big league catcher and older brother of Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, will likely be named the clubs hitting coach in the near future. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch was first to report the news on Tuesday. The Cardinals and Molina have yet to discuss salary terms, according to a source, but thats not believed to be a deal-breaker. The move will allow Bengie and Yadier to be together on the same team for the first times in their careers. Bengie and brother Jose Molina were teammates in Anaheim from 2001-05 but younger brother Yadier has yet to have the opportunity to share teams with either of his brothers. The older Molina has no coaching experience but hit .274 during 13 big league seasons with the Angels, Blue Jays, Giants and Rangers. He last played with Texas in 2010. The 38-year-old never walked more than 27 times in a season. Bengie thought he had a deal to join the Cardinals as Yadiers backup prior to the 2011 season. He recalled the story during the 2011 World Series to FOXSportsMidwest.com, saying he purchased a Cardinals hat and wept because of how excited his father would have been before the final contract details couldnt be agreed upon and the deal fell through. The Cardinals were one of the first teams to hire an assistant hitting coach. His job is to work with hitters in the batting cage and the film room both before and during games. Per MLB rules, the assistant hitting coach is not allowed to be in the dugout during games. An announcement on Molina could come in the next few weeks.
