The St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Lance Berkman pulled off an impressive April Fools' Day prank on starter Adam Wainwright Sunday. They pretended to give away his truck. As reported by multiple outlets, the shenanigans began prior to the third inning of the Cardinals' final spring training game when an announcement was made that the club was giving away a free truck to a lucky fan. The truck - a 2009 Chevy Silverado that belonged to Wainwright pulled onto the Roger Dean Stadium warning track and began to take a lap around the field. The winning name was announced and an excited father and his son, both part of the prank, celebrated as they ran onto the field and jumped into the back of the pickup truck. A confused Wainwright noticed the Georgia license plates as the truck passed the Cardinals dugout. Driving the truck was Berkman, who peeked out from the drivers seat window just as the apparent winners jumped into the truck bed. Berkman then drove the truck off the field as Wainwrights teammates looked at him for a reaction. "I wanted to see who was driving," Wainwright told The Associated Press. "I looked around (the dugout) and didn't hear or see Lance. "As long as that's a joke, that is well done. I don't know if that's a joke, yet." Oh it was a joke. And a darn good one. The prank was organized and planned by Berkman, who used third baseman David Freeses uncle as the apparent winner. Skip Schumaker was involved in the planning as well. Manager Mike Matheny was aware it would be happening but had no part in organizing it. "Hilarious," Wainwright told The Associated Press. "Those are the types of things that keep baseball pretty fun - besides the fact that baseball is already pretty fun." It wasnt the first time Berkman had his teammates laughing this spring. The veteran showed up to their first practice wearing a fake mustache and aviator shades, causing some to not even recognize him. The defending World Series Champions open the regular season Wednesday night in Miami against the Marlins. The Associated Press contributed to this report
