Lance Berkman confirmed that he will have surgery on his injured right knee in Houston Thursday morning by Dr. Mark Adickes. "Today was the consultation and I'm getting it done first thing in the morning," Berkman said in Houston Wednesday. Berkman will undergo the procedure to repair a torn meniscus as well as torn cartilage in the knee but he said there may be additional damage that doctors have yet to see on an MRI. "From what they can see on the MRI they really can't tell exactly what's going on," said Berkman. "They know for sure I have a torn meniscus and they know I tore my cartilage but they just don't know how bad. They'll be able to determine that when they get in there." Berkman again acknowledged that it's possible he doesn't return after the surgery, depending on the results. "When I get the news tomorrow as to what they actually had to do, there's a couple of different possibilities, one of which is that it's not as severe as the worst possible scenario," said Berkman. "As far as the other stuff, where I would be out the remainder of the year, I think the decision of whether I want to continue playing or not I would want to make in the offseason. It's just one of those things... you realize you can't play forever. Certainly when you get to be my age and you suffer a significant injury it can help push you out the door. I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't at least considering that possibility." Berkman is in his second season with the Cardinals after the playing the first eleven-plus years of his career with the Astros. If, indeed, he retires during the off-season, Berkman will rank among the best sluggers of his era, with 359 career home runs, a .409 OBP and .955 OPS. Berkman ranks 11th among active players in home runs, 4th in OBP and 9th in slugging percentage.
