Despite a superb spring, Yuniesky Betancourt has been released. In his contract, March 24th was designated as the deadline for the Phillies to either keep him on the big league roster or let him go. They chose to let him go even after Betancourt hit .447 with 14 RBI with 3 doubles and a home run in 47 at-bats. This means that both Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen will make the team as utility infielders. I am a little confused by this move, but not in the way you may be thinking. I like Frandsen; while there is no guarantee he will have a solid year like he did in 2012, he has paid his dues and earned a spot on the team. Galvis still has options and therefore, could have started the year in Triple-A and worked on his offense where he will get many more at-bats. If Betancourt did not work out, they could have released him and then brought up Galvis. That would have given the Phillies more options. As it stands now, they are walking across a very tight rope with little room for error....

Phillies Looking For Outfield Help?

The infield is set.  The race for the final bullpen spot is likely down to either Phillippe Aumont or Michael Stutes.  But what about the Phillies outfield? Should the Phils go with Ender Inciarte or look to add someone else to be the fifth outfielder? Ben Revere and Domonic Brown are locked into everyday spots in center and right.  Left field, at least in the short term, will...

Michael Young: Still much more to offer

It’s a beautiful, sunny day here in Clearwater Bill, Connie and I take our front row seats in the Tiki Terrace. We usually take this opportunity to verbally support our Phil’s and torment any opponent that comes in ear shot, ” Hey Skippy”, Twins outfielder. As we go thru our linage of insults I spot one player going thru his stretches and playing catch. All the while conversing...

Lannan Lit Up by Blue Jays, Phils Crushed, 13-4

With one week left of spring training, the Phillies and Blue Jays squared off once again this afternoon in Dunedin. John Lannan took the hill, and did not have an easy outing. Lannan had no alibis for giving up a dozen. "Got my butt kicked. Gotta move on." Good plan....

Phils Deal RHP Rodriguez to O’s for OF Welty

Ronnie Welty, image- MiLB.com The disassembling of the prospect group known as the Baby Aces continues, as the Phillies have traded once highly regarded righty hurler Julio Rodriguez to Baltimore for outfielder Ronnie Welty. Rodriguez once dominated Class A ball, but looked far more human with Double-A Reading last season.  Drafted in the 8th round of the 2008 amateur draft, the...
