It was a tumultous first year for Bill Smith. He had to face the reality of the face-of-the-franchise Torii Hunter leaving via free agency as well as annual Cy Young candidate Johan Santana making it known that he wanted to play in a larger market – preferably New York. In the first few months at the helm, Smith made two trades that would forever tarnish his reputation in Minnesota in the fan's eyes. In November 2007, Smith dealt Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Eduardo Morlan to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Delmon Young, Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie. In efforts to replace Hunter’s right-handed stick, the Twins purchased the promising Young at a high price. Garza would help fortify the Rays rotation while Bartlett would boost the Rays defense in the infield. After receiving 16.2 wins above replacement from Garza and Bartlett, Tampa’s shrewed front office would move the pair for more prospects and useful parts including Sam Fuld, Brandon Guyer, Hak-Ju Lee, Cesar Ramos and...

Terry Ryan climbs back in the saddle after Twins oust Bill Smith

Bill Smith is out. Terry Ryan is back in — for now. In a somewhat surprising twist, the Minnesota Twins announced on Monday that they were reversing the Ryan-Smith switcheroo that had taken place after the 2007 season. With Smith (left) taking the fall for Minnesota's 63-99 record in 2011, Ryan (right) will move back into the general manager position on an interim basis. Ryan...

Twins fire Smith, return Ryan to GM role (AP)

The Minnesota Twins have fired general manager Bill Smith and returned Terry Ryan to the role on an interim basis. The change was announced Monday. Smith was one of Ryan's assistants who took the job four years ago when Ryan stepped down to become a special assistant, citing burnout. Ryan served as general manager from 1994-07.

Rebuilding Differences

The Twins fired Bill Smith over rebuilding issues, among other things: The interpretation from here is that Smith was the key decision-maker feeling as if the Twins could fix their problems with minor changes in the operation. And that the Pohlads, while not officially signing on to rebuilding, were convinced that significant problems had to be addressed in player evaluation, in...

Philosophy

Philosophical differences led to the firing of Bill Smith: “This is a culmination of multiple internal conversations among Jim Pohlad, Bill Smith and myself,” said Twins president Dave St. Peter during a late afternoon press conference. “We just felt we weren’t on the same page,” Pohlad said. Asked about the philosophical differences within the organization...

The Minnesota Twins say Bill Smith out as general manager and replaced by Terry Ryan as interim GM.

Pure Speculation

Nick’s Twins Blog tries to make sense of why the Twins fired Bill Smith. He figures either Smith wanted to rebuild slower, or wanted a bigger payroll to make the team competitive now. This passage struck me, however: I wrote a post back in late September yearning for an injection of fresh thinking into the Twins’ front office power structure. While swapping Ryan for...
