B.J. Upton is close to making a decision on where he will call home for the upcoming years, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Topkin adds that a decision could come as soon as this week. Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and XM Radio adds that the Upton race appears to be down to the Braves, Phillies and of course a mystery team. Bowden adds that the Braves do have a slight lead in signing Upton. The Braves need a center fielder to replace fellow free agent, Micheal Bourn who is probably to pricey for Atlanta (but I believe a better fit). The Phillies also need a slugging outfielder, specifically in center field to replace Shane Victorino who was traded to the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Upton hit .246/.298/.446 with 28 home runs and 78 RBIs but struck out a career high 169 times in 573 at bats. He did also steal 31 bases while being caught only 6 times. Upton has earned about $16mm in his career so far and will cash in wherever he signs. Stay up to date with all signings with our free agent tracker.
