The Rays need to win every game they possibly can in order to make the playoffs. Losing to the Orioles doesn’t cut it. Losing 2 of 3 to the Orioles makes the Rays’ upcoming season with the Red Sox basically their entire season. The Rays had already squandered an opportunity for a sweep, but they looked for a series win on Wednesday, sending 5th starter Wade Davis to the mound against MLB losses leader Jeremy Guthrie. Interestingly, though, Davis entered the start with a 10-8 record and a 4.36 ERA, and despite a 7-17 record, Guthrie entered with a better 4.29 ERA. The difference in records between the two pitchers was run support- Davis had received a staff-high 5.24 runs per start, and Guthrie receiving just 3.65 runs per start.
