At 61-101, the Chicago Cubs amazingly weren’t the worst team in Major League Baseball last season. That honor went to the 55-107 Houston Astros, but since they are already on pace to finish this season 162-0, the With Leather Worst Team Watch is focused solely on the Cubbies for the time being. Wait, that’s not fair. Let’s throw the Miami Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins in there, too, just so we have a little balance and wiggle room. But team president Theo Epstein doesn’t want us counting the North Siders out just yet. And maybe, this blogger writes with a partially serious face, we should take the Cubs just a little more seriously this year. After all, people thought the ’67 Cubs would suck just like the 59-103 ’66 team did, and we all remember what happened with them right? Of course not, so remind us, Chicago Tribune. Those ’67 Cubs led the National League with 702 runs, finishing 87-74 and breathing new life into the organization.“That ’66 season was a transition ye...

The Chicago Cubs get to pick second this June in the MLB Rule 4 Draft as part of their “reward” for sucking so much last season. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess) they were unable to suck as much as the Astros so they might lose out on the overall best player available, unless the Astros decide to implement their Carlos Correa plan again. Not that Correa was a terrible...
Cubs win! The Cubs took an early lead on a first inning home run by Anthony Rizzo that still hasn't landed. Combine that with eight strong innings by Jeff Samardzija (two hits, one walk, 9 strikeouts) and it's a recipe for a Cubs win. Carlos Marmol made the end of the game interesting by doing Carlos Marmol things at the beginning of the ninth, but Sveum rightly pulled him...

PIT – A.J. Burnett (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
“Now we play games that mean something. It’s time to go.” – A.J. Burnett
A.J. Burnett for the first time in his career will take the mound on Opening Day. He went 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA in three...
The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.
Burnett was particularly awesome...
Final: Cubs 3, Pirates 1 (box)
WP: Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: A.J. Burnett (0-1, 4.76 ERA)
SV: Kyuji Fujikawa (1, 0.00 ERA)
A.J. Burnett struck out ten batters in his first career Opening Day start, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs scored two runs in the first inning on an Anthony Rizzo home run and led the rest of the way.
Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija gave up just two...
