When it comes time to prepare for fantasy drafts, many team owners use the common strategy of using stats from the season prior to the last to scout players. Fantasy baseball season is a long and arduous journey every year, and injured players/fantasy busts can easily end up as prime sleeper picks; in 2010, Adrian Beltre and Kelly Johnson were such players, coming from nowhere to putting up significant numbers for owners who picked them off waiver wires or late in drafts.
A player’s decline in performance is sometimes attributed to reasons like age or drop in talent (sometimes injury leads to this); this being said, there are many instances where a fantasy bust ended up that way for more intangible reasons like inexperience, subtle changes to approach, or just plain bad luck.
