Edwin Encarnacion, Colby Rasmus and Yunel Escobar homered off Detroit newcomer Anibal Sanchez, leading the Toronto Blue Jays over the Tigers 5-1 Saturday. The Tigers have lost three straight and four of five after a five-game winning streak that briefly lifted them into first place in the AL Central. Sanchez, acquired from Miami earlier in the week along with infielder Omar Infante, gave up five runs and eight hits in six-plus innings in his Detroit debut. Sanchez (5-8 overall) lost to Toronto for the second time this season; he gave up six runs in 3 1-3 innings of a 12-5 loss on June 22 while pitching for the Marlins. Henderson Alvarez (7-7) pitched seven innings for the win. Encarnacion hit his 28th home run and Rasmus went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in his first start of the season at designated hitter. Facing Detroit for the first time, Alvarez (7-7) allowed one run and five hits. He walked two and struck out four. Alvarez's only walks were issued consecutively, to Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder in the sixth, but Delmon Young and Brennan Boesch both flied out to end the threat. J.A. Happ worked the final two innings for Toronto. Rasmus drove in Toronto's first run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Detroit tied it in the fourth when Young hit a two-out single and Boesch followed with a double to center, the only extra-base hit allowed by Alvarez. The Blue Jays reclaimed the lead in the bottom half when Encarnacion led off with an opposite-field drive to right. Escobar, who returned to the lineup after missing the past three games with a sore back, made it 3-1 with a leadoff homer to center in the sixth, his seventh. The Blue Jays chased Sanchez and padded their lead in the seventh. Rajai Davis doubled and stole third before Rasmus ended Sanchez's outing by hitting his 18th homer. NOTES: Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista swung a bat before the game, the first time he's done so since injuring his left wrist July 16 at New York. Bautista is eligible to come off the 15-day DL on Aug. 1, but manager John Farrell said Bautista will likely need a few more days to recover. ... Toronto's Adam Lind (back) missed his second straight game. ... Attendance was 41,832.

Detroit Tigers trade rumors: one more deal

The Detroit Tigers made a big pre-deadline trade as expected. Bringing in Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez shored up two of the team’s biggest needs, another capable starting pitcher and a solid 2nd baseman. The only apparent need still on GM Dave Dombrowski’s wish list is a right-handed hitting outfielder, preferably one with some pop and defensive acumen. Carlos Quentin re-upped...

Is Ricky Romero to blame for Toronto Blue Jay’s decline?

The Toronto Blue Jays are currently fighting a losing battle for a wild card berth in the tough American League East. The Jays have faced a slew of injuries that have decimated their pitching staff from the likes of Brandon Morrow, Drew Hutchinson, Kyle Drabek, Sergio Santos and Luis Perez. The Blue Jays acclaimed ace Ricky Romero is one of the few starters who have not visited...

Blue Jays' Mathis makes strides at plate

The Toronto Blue Jays knew they were getting a good defensive catcher when they obtained Jeff Mathis from the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason. However, they also saw some hitting ability in him that was not suggested by a .194 career batting average. Hitting coach Dwayne Murphy made some adjustments, and Mathis is batting .264 with five homers, 13 RBI and an .826 on-base...

Verlanders Loss Must Have Been Contagious For The Tigers They Dropped 3 In A Row

It started Thursday night in Cleveland when Justin Verlander gave up back to back home runs to lose the lead he had. Then the Tigers would drop the game. The next night the Tigers would lose again. With all the losses the Tigers are falling in the A.L. Central where they are now 2-1/2 games back behind Chicago. The Tigers looked good until that Verlander loss. The team was tearing...

Blue Jays-Mariners Preview

Ricky Romero has done little to help his cause during an absolutely miserable July. Then again, neither have his teammates. The left-hander tries to avoid losing a career-worst seventh consecutive start Monday when the Toronto Blue Jays begin a 10-game road swing with the first of three contests against the Seattle Mariners. To say Romero (8-7, 5.75 ERA) is struggling is an understatement...

Five successful Dombrowski-era trades

It appears that the Tigers have made their pre-deadline trade already this year, acquiring second baseman Omar Infante, a former Tiger, and right-handed starter Anibal Sanchez from the Miami Marlins for rookie Jacob Turner, catching prospect Rob Brantly and minor-league pitcher Brian Flynn. It finally answered the season-long debate of who is going to play second base and gave the...
