The Blue Jays have announced that they’ve traded minor league prospect Frank Gailey to the Philadelphia Phillies for Ben Francisco today. Normally, this would seem like a depth move to bolster the bench, except in this case, it’s difficult to envision that there isn’t another move incoming that will complement this one. With the addition of Francisco, the Blue Jays now have 6 outfielders, with Jose Bautista and Colby Rasmus entrenched in their respective positions at RF and CF. The team already has Rajai Davis on the bench, and although he could be moved in a package, I’m not certain that his market value would land the club anything particularly useful. If I had to guess (and it’s not exactly rocket science), it’s more likely that one of Snider/Thames will be on the move this time around. Between the two, Snider would provide more trade value, being the younger prospect (23), and with better upside than Thames. While this would be a disappointmen...

News briefs: Phillies trade OF Ben Francisco to Blue Jays

Monday's MLB news briefs: The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder Ben Francisco to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league left-hander Frank Gailey.

The Ben Francisco Era Begins

The Jays have announced that they acquired Ben Francisco from the Phillies for minor league LOOGY Frank Gailey. This trade has quite a few questions surrounding it. Why acquire him? Yes the Jays have two left handed hitters vying for the left field slot, but Francisco has negative splits. In 2011 he had a tOPS+ of 109 vs a right handed pitcher and 88 against a left handed pitcher...

Farewell Benny Fran

Ben Francisco has been traded to the North Pole. Okay, not really, just Toronto. The Blue Jays sent a 26 year old left-handed reliever to the Phillies in exchange. Francisco batted .259/.732 in 3 seasons in Philly. If you recall, he was the "throw-in" on the Cliff Lee/Indians trade. Interesting note- his closest comparison according to Baseball-Reference is Wes Chamberlain...

Bye, Bye Benny

With a plethora of outfielders now in the Phillies system after a few signings, Ben Francisco has been traded Toronto for Minor League relief pitcher Frank Gailey. Gailey, 26, is from Philly and has a record of 23-15 with a 2.45 ERA in 175 appearances in the minors. Francisco had a promising spring training before the 2011 season, but his hot streak ran cold quickly. While Francisco...
