Sometimes more is less, or least not as much as it seems.

The 10-player deal between the Blue Jays and the Houston Astros appears to fit the not-as-much as it seems

category.

The Blue Jays parted ways with five minor-leaguers, one to be named at the end of August. They parted

with two major-leaguers in reliever Francisco Cordero, who had outstayed his welcome in Toronto, and

reserve outfielder Ben Francisco, who received little playing time.

The Blue Jays, who beat the Red Sox 6-1 Friday, get immediate pitching help in left-hander J.A. Happ and

right-hander Brandon Lyon, who broke into the majors with Toronto. Right-hander David Carpenter also came

over from the Astros but was shipped to Class-AAA Las Vegas.

"We're obviously getting Happ for this year and he has two years of control," Anthopoulos said in a

conference call on Friday. "He's a starter and we need depth. We like his ability to strike guys out. We

see him like when we acquired (Carlos) Villanueva, with a little bit of an upside. There's a significant

gap between our upper minor-leaguers and low-A prospects."

Happ will start out in the bullpen at Toronto but is expected to work his way into the rotation.

Carpenter should find his way back to the majors soon. "For us, with a guy like Carpenter in the deal,

at the end of the day we traded a bunch of guys for potentially three major-leaguers," Anthopoulos said.

The minor-leaguer traded by the Blue Jays are right-handers Asher Wojciechowski and Joe Musgrove, left-

hander David Rollins and catcher Carlos Perez.

"I want to be fair to the pitchers," Anthopoulos said. "They have a chance to be solid, but are not our

top prospects. This was a depth deal."

Call it what you want but it was hardly a blockbuster.
