You can argue that the term ace is used far too much.

After losing 12 decisions in a row, Ricky Romero can hardly be called the Blue Jays' ace anymore. In the strict sense, he probably had yet to earn the title anyway. He had not pitched well enough long enough to be considered the staff ace to suit some tastes.

If any pitcher has looked like an ace so far this season, it is Brandon Morrow. Who knows what kind of season he would have had if he did not suffered a left oblique injury in the first inning of his start against Washington on June 11?

He did not pitch for the Blue Jays again until Aug. 25. In his third start since coming off the disabled list, he allowed two runs over six innings in a no-decision in a 6-4 win over the Orioles on Wednesday.

His one poor inning was Baltimore's two-run third. It started with a home run by Adam Jones. Three walks followed that to set up another run.

"It was great, minus the one inning," Morrow said. "Solo home runs are going to happen, but if I could have limited the walks, then I would have had a better inning there and maybe been able to go a little bit longer."

Meanwhile, Romero is being given some extra time off between starts. Instead of pitching Saturday at Fenway Park, he will not start again until next Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners at Rogers Centre.

When you get down to it, ace is just a term. The Blue Jays need both Morrow and Romero at their best before they have a chance to become postseason contenders. They just need their good pitchers to pitch well, whatever title they have.
