The Toronto Blue Jays should find out quickly how left-hander Jamie Moyer fits into their desperate pitching situation. Moyer was signed to a minor league contract Monday and is expected to make two starts for Class AAA Las Vegas. The Blue Jays will decide then whether to bring him to Toronto or let him try his luck elsewhere. "There's no guarantees, but we want a two-start look and then determine, 'Is he an improvement in our rotation?'" Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. Moyer, 49, began the season with the Colorado Rockies, for whom he was 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA in 10 starts before he was designated for assignment. He signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles on June 6 with the agreement that he would make three starts for Class AAA Norfolk and he would either be promoted or released. After his third start, the Orioles offered Moyer another start with Norfolk, but he opted to become a free agent. Moyer went 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in...

OPS Fantasy Leagues: I Fought The Lawrie And The Lawrie Won

Brett Lawrie is finally starting to live up to the hype he had coming into this season. After hovering around a .700 OPS in April and May, Lawrie has an .870 OPS in June. This is especially encouraging because his BABIP and his HR/FB in June are not indicating that he may simply be receiving good luck. Instead, his entire approach appears to have been reworked, with a walk rate nearly...

Perchance to dream . . .

(yes, I've been very quiet here lately. I've started a new job and my schedule is unsettled, posting may be irregular for some time to come)Yes, i was the one saying, at the beginning of the year, that the Jays had enough pitching to begin the season. I reached that conclusion, which I still find valid, because you had to have turns to give the guys you had or give up on...

Markakis' absence reminds Orioles of his value

Some players are evaluated on what they bring to a team. The tangible, the intangible -- the talking point is always the positive influence they have on their club. For other players, the discussion centers around what could be, what hasn't become yet or what some think may never happen. The analysis of what a player isn't often has to do with expectations. For Baltimore...

Jose Bautista’s monster shot exits Fenway, dents SUV in parking lot (video)

Jose Bautista absolutely mashed a home run during the 4th inning of Wednesday’s tilt between the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. With Boston in control with a 7-1 lead, Bautista unloaded on a Jon Lester pitch, drilling it over the Green Monster and depositing it in a nearby parking lot, [...]

Orioles Using Bloomberg's Data Presentation Tool

Yesterday the Orioles held an event at Camden Yards with Bloomberg Sports to show off the Bloomberg Baseball Data Tool they've started using (you know, the one that makes those graphics we see on the broadcast showing that Brian Matusz throws 55% fastballs, 15% change-ups, etc.). I unfortunately forgot my notepad, so the recap is all from memory. Dan Duquette* spoke briefly...

Series Preview: Indians at Orioles 6/28 - 7/1

The good news is, Casey Kotchman broke Andy Pettitte's ankle and he will be out for 6 weeks. You can't cheat your way out of a fractured leg. And now for something completely different. June 28th, 7:05 PM EDT: Zach McAllister, RHP, 1-1, 3.96 ERA vs Wei-Yin Chen, LHP, 7-3, 3.38 ERA McAllister will be making his triumphant return to the big leagues in place of Jeanmar...

Does Toronto or Boston Have the Most Dangerous 3-4 Combo in the American League?

For years, the most feared 3-4 combo in the American League was David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. Now, that title might belong to division rivals Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. The past two seasons, Bautista has lead the league in home runs and is at the front of the pack once again this year with 24 dingers. Encarnacion, like Bautista, has found his power stroke, sitting fourth...

Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 6

BOSTON -- Colby Rasmus, J.P. Arencibia and Jose Bautista hit two-run homers to power the Toronto Blue Jays to a rain-interrupted 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. The game was delayed for an hour and 56 minutes in the seventh inning because of severe storms. The win, in their first game in Boston this season, moved the Blue Jays into a tie with the Red Sox...

Can Brian Matusz Ever Regain What Made Him So Special at the End of 2010?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Right now, despite the Orioles doing relatively well so far this season, it is been apparent that there’s been an issue with the starting pitching outside of Jason Hammel and Wei-Yin Chen.   On Tuesday night, southpaw Brian Matusz struggled on the mound again in a loss...
