Despite being fired by the Red Sox a few weeks ago, Bobby Valentine can't let go.  Hey Bobby, it's over. You got fired. It's time to move on. In another sly move to guarantee he never manages again, Valentine spoke to Bob Costas of NBC Sports about the Red Sox effort after the big trade in August.Specifically, he called out David Ortiz. (You can view the full interview here.)I'll reference NESN here for the quote about Ortiz."David Ortiz came back after spending about six weeks on the disabled list after we thought it would be just a week," said Valentine. "He got a couple of hits his first two times up, drove in a couple of runs, we were off to the races, and then he realized that this trade meant we were not going to run this race and not even finish this race properly. He decided not to play anymore. I think at that time it was all downhill from there."It's a pretty candid interview with Costas, because he's the man, and he always treats his interviewees with great respect. Valentine even admits that much of the blame for the dreadful season falls on him. But for Valentine to say that about Ortiz seems a bit much. Can we chalk that up to Bobby V being Bobby V? Absolutely.As far as Ortiz is concerned, if he did put it on cruise control for the final two months, who can blame him? They had just traded away a significant chunk of their payroll (and production), so it was obvious the club was not going to make a move to be in contention. Sure, some will say, "well, he's still getting paid to be David Ortiz, right?" Yes. Yes he is. But when ownership says, "Ah, screw it," what's the point of giving 100%?Valentine should have recognized that point in regards to Ortiz. Better yet, he should have declined the interview. I like Costas, but the only thing to gain here was to have Valentine sling mud. Mission accomplished.
