Last week, Mariano Rivera let the Yankees know that he was return for the 2013 season. Does this mark the end for Rafael Soriano in New York? Soriano's agent Scott Boras doesn't think so. He thinks the reliever is a good fit for the Yankees, if the sides can come to an agreement on numbers. “I can only say the Yankees told us they were interested in signing Soriano while expecting Rivera to come back,” Boras said. Soriano converted 42 of 46 saves opportunites with 2.26 ERA last season in place of the injured Rivera. The Yankees made Soriano a one-year, $13.3 million qualifying offer last week, and he has until Friday to accept it for a virtual raise of $800,000 including his $1.5 million buyout. However, Boras is seeking  a long term deal for his client in a tune of 4 years and $60 million. “It was a correct decision two years ago to sign Soriano to provide depth, and Mariano was younger,” Boras said. “Soriano saved [42] games and Mariano is two years older. It was a wise move then and a wiser move now.” Can the Yankees really invest between $25-$30 million on two relievers?
1 Comment:
  • Fifteen million per year for a closer the caliber of Soriano is chump change to the Yankees. When Rivera hangs it up after 2013 they will still have a great closer to step in for Mo Man. They gotta make this happen and Soriano should be smart enough to know that he has to step aside for 'THE GREATEST CLOSER' in the history of the game.

MLB Rumors: 5 Teams Who Could Overspend To Sign Rafael Soriano

Once Rafael Soriano officially opted out of the final year of his contract, leaving over $12 million on the table, many people felt as if he immediately became the top closer available on the open market this free agency season. More on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in Staten Island and the Rockaways

Squawking about the state of the Yankees is the last thing on my mind this days. Squawking about the state of New York City and surrounding regions after Hurricane Sandy is what I am most focused on. Here is the latest from Staten Island:I was heartened to see that Mayor Bloomberg finally cancelled the New York City Marathon (and TheWeek.com cited this blog and the argument I made...

Yankees’ Left Side of Infield Isn’t Necessarily Left-Wing

Abraham Lincoln once famously said “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Do you think that applies to infields, too? The Yankees’ Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have become famous over the years first for their friendship and then for their falling out. Perhaps it has something to do with their political beliefs. In an interview with ESPN back in September, Jeter let...

Yankees claim two relievers off waivers

The New York Yankees have claimed off waivers right-hander David Herndon from the Toronto Blue Jays and lefty Josh Spence from the San Diego Padres. The 27-year-old Herndon was claimed by Toronto from Philadelphia on Oct. 23. The Blue Jays then designated him for assignment Oct. 31. Herndon made five appearances for the Phillies this season before having elbow ligament-replacement...

Bill Clinton Compared to Mariano Rivera by NBC Pundit David Gregory

In this case, you might call them “swing-and-miss” states. In the days leading up to Tuesday night’s presidential election, sources noted that Barack Obama was getting help from former president Bill Clinton in sealing the deal in a few key swing states. Clinton’s popularity in his post-presidency remains high, so the tactic isn’t all that surprising. However, a comparison...

Yesterday, some Trenton tweetybird leaked Baseball America's top 10 Yankee prospects for the coming meltdown year. The New York Yankees made a roster move today that could have implications regarding their catcher’s role next season.  The team claimed catcher Eli Whiteside off waivers from the World Champion San Francisco Giants.  Whiteside has spent the last four seasons with the Giants.  He spent 2009-2011 as the team’s primary backup catcher before spending much of last season in the...

Report: Soria Open To Becoming Set-Up Man For Yankees Rivera

During his rise to elite closer status, Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria had been compared to New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.  Now, it could be possible the two are in pinstripes next season.  According to ESPN’s Andrew Marchand, Soria’s agent Oscar Suarez has said his client would be open to becoming a setup man for the Yankees and Rivera.  The Yankees are the...

MLB Rumors: Joakim Soria Would Set Up Mariano Rivera With Yankees, But Wants To Close Anywhere Else

Joakim Soria was one of the top closers for the Kansas City Royals over the past few years, prior to missing all of the 2012 MLB season due to Tommy John surgery. Now facing a decision in free agency, Soria would like to once again establish himself as one of the elite closers in the game. Unless, of course, the New York Yankees made a phone call. That would be an entirely different...

Enter Sandman, No Returning Sandman

The big news in Yankee Universe today is that Mariano Rivera has informed General Manager Brian Cashman that he wants to come back and pitch in 2013. This news comes just days after Rafael Soriano informed the team he is opting out of the last year of his contract to test the free agent market.
