Beantown Banter OLD:
Trot was one of the grittiest players out there. Similar to the way Pedey plays on today's team, Trot always walked off the field at the end of the day covered in dirt and sweat. That's why I remember him as a personal favorite, and also why I have a distinct bias against J.D. Drew, his replacement.
Nixon was drafted by Boston in '93 and made his MLB debut in '96. He played with the Bo'Sox until 2006, when he was replaced by Drew. Trot was known as a Yankee killer. In addition to numerous postseason hits, Nixon hit .400 against the Yanks in the '04 campaign.
#7 was in fact the last player to drive in a run in that championship postseason. His double in the 3rd inning of the 4th game of the World Series scored the last two runs of the series, by either team.
Another highlight in Nixon's career was a game in which he got ejected. He was not on the field, and not even on the active roster. When an umpire ruled a Gabe Kapler shot off the Green Monster a double, Nixon erupted in fury. Though he was ejected, replays did show Kapler's homer caromed above the home run line.
After his time in Beantown was done, Nixon had stints with the Indians and Mets. His injury-plagued career really took it's tole towards the tail-end of his tenure in the majors.
Nixon was passionate, talented, and a relentless worker. Though he is one of those players that will probably be forgotten over time, he will always be remembered by me, and hopefully some of you as well.
