On Wednesday, while Boston was concluding their laborious managerial search, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired Rhode Island native Chris Iannetta from the Rockies for right-hander Tyler Chatwood. The Red Sox had sought to acquire Iannetta at various different points prior to obtaining Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The Angels have made a fantastic move here, giving up a young pitcher with little more than his age in his favor for one the better hitting catchers in the game. The move is a minor loss for Boston, who almost certainly could have found an arm who represented an equivalent value to  Chatwood and benefited from the acquisition of Iannetta. Boston cooled on Iannetta when they acquired Jarrod Saltalamacchia during the 2010 season. The presence of the power-hitting Ryan Lavarnway means Boston is likely set at catcher at the moment. Still, the cost paid for Iannetta was well with Boston’s means and while Salty showed some potential mid-summer, he also gave the Sox reason to w...

Pedro Martinez's Red Sox Tenure Will Always Be Remembered As One of the Best in Boston Sports History

Pedro Martinez announced Saturday night that he will soon announce that he's officially retiring from baseball, something that has been a foregone conclusion for some time now. Martinez said that he'll make it official soon, but he hasn't pitched in a major league game since 2009, and even then, it was clear that his best pitching was behind him. Injuries and general...

Mike Scioscia Weeps As Angels Jettison Jeff Mathis

Things are moving along quite smartly this offseason, as the Angels unloaded Jeff Mathis for LHP Brad Mills to Toronto, which means the Halos have managed to trade both their 2010 receivers to the same team. Mills was actually fairly interesting in the lower minors, but he spent three years at AAA posting uninspiring numbers (4.32 ERA with a 21-23 record, 7.8 K/9, 2.63 K/BB). If...

Call it what you want, but Jeff Mathis is now a Blue Jay

The Angels made a huge move this morning, acquiring Houston Astros manager Brad Mills. No, not really, but they did pick up Brad Mills from the Blue Jays. What did it take to get the lefty with a lifetime ERA of 8.57? It only took a guy with a lifetime batting average of .194. Yes, Angels fans, Jeff Mathis is now a Toronto Blue Jay. Mathis career in an Angels uniform is now over...

David Ortiz Impressed by Bobby Valentine's Short Trip to Dominican Republic to Chat Up Slugger

Bobby Valentine hasn't been on the job for even week yet, but he's already proved to be a pretty busy guy. One Red Sox free agent is taking note, and he sounds pretty impressed. Valentine spent Friday night in the Dominican Republic,...

Are Players Worried?

To no one’s surprise anonymous “sources” are saying that some Red Sox players are unhappy with the selection of Bobby Valentine as manager. The theory goes that the players are unhappy because Valentine may call them out publicly.Stepping away from the whole “they have a job and they should shut up and deal with it” mindset for a minute (though frankly that’s where my...
