(Getty Images) BOSTON—The Boston Red Sox have activated Matt Thornton from the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Pawtucket the team announced on Sunday. Villarreal was optioned after Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Thornton is expected to be available for Sunday night’s contest as the Red Sox wrap up their series in Los Angeles. Thornton has been on the disabled list since August 7 with a right oblique strain. He performed respectably prior to the injury posting a 0-2 record with a 2.16 ERA in 10 games after being acquired by the Local Nine on July 12. Overall this season, he is 0-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 50 games between the Chicago White Sox and Red Sox. Villarreal made his Red Sox debut on Monday walking Marco Scutaro, the only batter he faced, with the bases loaded to give the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory.
