After signing a seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, Carl Crawford has been a huge disappointment. Now in his second season with the team, the outfielder has told those close to him that he wants to shut down his season and undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Crawford is reportedly reluctant to tell the Red Sox of his preference to have surgery because he fears what the backlash will be from team management, teammates and Boston’s fans. General manager Ben Cherington claims he has heard nothing from Crawford regarding potentially having surgery.

In 2011 during his first year in Boston, Crawford played in 130 games and finished the season with a .255 batting average, 11 home runs, 56 RBI, 129 hits and just 23 walks against 104 strikeouts. His OPS was also a dismal .694.

So far in 2012, Crawford has played in just 29 games, and is hitting .287, with three home runs, 19 RBI and an OPS of .813.

Simply put, Crawford has been a gigantic bust in Boston. Now it appears he wants to undergo a procedure that could put him out of action for as long as a year.

If I’m the Red Sox I just tell Crawford to get the surgery and get fully healthy. He’s not going to do anything for them if he’s not 100 percent. The only way he can turn his career around is if he’s confident and that’s only going to happen if he’s healthy.
