Before the start of Saturday’s late afternoon game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox made a roster move by designating relief pitcher Clayton Mortensen for assignment and calling up infielder Jonathan Diaz from Triple-A Pawtucket. Mortensen, who was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, recently finished up a rehab with the Pawsox recovering from a strained right groin. He pitched in three games including one start for Pawtucket and went 0-0 with 4.50 ERA in four innings. Prior to his injury, Mortensen struggled with Boston after a successful 2012 campaign going 1-2 with a 5.34 ERA in 30.1 innings. With the addition of Diaz, the Red Sox get a guy who is a versatile infielder and has played second, short and third for the Pawsox in 2013. In 55 games for Pawtucket, Diaz hit .242 with two home runs and 21 RBIs and isn’t expected to be with the Red Sox for long unless Stephen Drew’s hamstring injury doesn’t heal over next few days.
