Kevin Youkilis was back at Fenway Park for the first time as an opposing player yesterday, but Boston’s fans gave the former Red Sox a wonderful tribute.

As the fan-favorite and former Red Sox stepped into the batters box for his first plate appearance, the Boston faithful gave him a standing ovation and serenaded him with chants of “Youk.” He stepped out of the box and tipped his cap to the crowd.

It was a really nice moment that showed the city still loved its former third baseman, even if he was in town as a member of the Chicago White Sox.

Video of the ovation after the jump.

As target=”_blank”>this video shows additionally shows, Sox fans even cheered when he singled in his first at bat, and used his hustle to score a run on an error later in the inning.

This was the kind of thing that makes you feel good about sports. Youkilis spent the first nine-and-a-half years of his career with the Red Sox and helped Boston win two World Series titles, was a three-time All-Star, and won the Hank Aaron Award in 2008. Just because he has moved on to another team doesn’t mean the fans of the only organization he had known until his mid-season trade have forgotten him.

Youkilis opened the season hitting just .233 in his first 42 games with Boston. He had just four home runs and 14 RBI. Since being traded to the White Sox on June 24, he is hitting .323 with three home runs and 15 RBI.

While the Red Sox came away with a 5-1 win Monday night, Youkilis went 3-for-4 with two doubles. The 33-year-old had a nice showing in his return.
