With the voluntary report date for pitchers and catchers just one week away, the Red Sox still have a number of questions looming. What will the team receive as compensation for Theo Epstein leaving? Will they finally sign Roy Oswalt? Will Tim Wakefield return? Will Jason Varitek be back? Seven days before baseball actions begins again, the team has some hard decisions to make.
One decision will definitely be made today. David Ortiz and the team are going to arbitration today and we will find out if he will be paid his requested $16.5M or the $12.65M the team filed for. Ortiz had hoped to reach an agreement on a multi-year deal with the Red Sox this off-season, but the two sides were never close on any such contract. Regardless of the arbiter’s ruling, Ortiz will be Boston’s primary DH this coming season, but it will be interesting to see if the process hurts the relationship between team management and their iconic slugger.
