According to reports, former Boston Red Sox catcher Kelly Shoppach sent the now-infamous texts to team ownership complaining about manager Bobby Valentine. The texts were sent in late July and were previously attributed to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

The New York Daily News cites several sources that claim Shoppach was “deeply involved” with writing the message, which was sent from Gonzalez’s cell phone.

Now it makes a lot of sense why the Red Sox traded Shoppach to the New York Mets last week.

Shoppach has denied his involvement in sending the text, or having anything to do with it.

Last week Yahoo! Sports reported that Gonzalez sent a text to management because he was irked that Valentine left starting pitcher Jon Lester in a game in which he gave up 11 runs. Gonzalez had reportedly texted ownership on behalf of himself and his teammates.

Owner John Henry and team president Larry Lucchino then held a meeting with a group of players in the team hotel before a series in New York against the Yankees.

The Daily News is now reporting that the message wasn’t Gonzalez’s idea or his opinion but came instead from a group of players that included Shoppach.

Gonzalez has repeatedly denied that he played a role in complaining about Valentine.

In 48 games with the Red Sox, Shoppach hit .250 with five home runs and 17 RBI.

Shoppach claims he has gotten text messages from former Red Sox teammates apologizing that his name has been associated with the situation, since they know he had nothing to do with it.

We’re not sure what to make of this whole thing. Either Shoppach was deeply involved, or he has become the scapegoat for the whole incident. Either way, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Boston Red Sox are a complete and utter mess.
