You could ask ten different Boston Red Sox fans right now what they think of the team’s off-season and you will probably get ten different answers. Heading into the off-season it was clear the team had needs (backup catching, bullpen, back of the rotation starters, outfield, pitching and more pitching) what with them coming off the biggest collapse in Major League Baseball history. But this was also a team that everyone expected to come close to winning 100 games the year before. It was clear this was going to be a make or break winter for the Beantown nine even with the majority of the 2011 squad coming back. With Spring Training less than a month away, I present the Red Sox off-season through a conversation with a rational and irrational Boston Fan. Part 2 – Starting Rotation Rational Fan – Tough to get excited about the starting rotation this year, eh? Irrational Fan – What do you mean? You mean you aren’t pumped that they signed world beaters like Aaron...

The Boston Red Sox agreed to terms Wednesday with right-handed pitcher Andrew Bailey on a one-year contract worth $3.9 million. The deal avoids arbitration. Bailey, who made $465,000 last year, asked for $4.7 million; the team offered $3.35 million. Bailey was acquired from the Oakland Athletics this winter. Red Sox Designate Scott Atchison for Assignment to Make Room for Cody Ross

To make room for outfielder Cody Ross on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated pitcher Scott Atchison for assignment. The team officially announced the move Thursday, just days after inking Ross to one-year, $3 million passed his physical. Boston will mark Ross’ sixth stop after stints with the Giants, Marlins, Reds, Dodgers and Tigers. Atchison, 35, made 17 appearances...

Boston Red Sox Continue Strange Offseason

While the Yankees have made dramatic improvements to their rotation, trading for Seattle’s Michael Pineda and signing former Dodger Hiroki Kuroda, the Red Sox have failed to make much of a splash this winter.  Earlier if the offseason the team acquired a pair of closer-type relievers in an effort to replace the departed Jonathan Papelbon; Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey are...

Report: Red Sox make offer to RHP Oswalt

The Boston Red Sox have set their sights on veteran righthander Roy Oswalt. The team made an offer to the Philadelphia Phillies hurler on Wednesday night, ESPNBoston.com reported on Thursday. Oswalt was plagued by a balky back last season and settled for a 9-10 mark with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts. The 34-year-old Oswalt is a three-time All-Star selection and was a National League...

State of the Red Sox Shows More Competitive American League, Culture Change in Boston

The Theo Epstein era is history. The Terry Francona administration is over. As the new season approaches, the scrutiny surrounding the Red Sox will be amplified more than ever due to the 7-20 collapse in September and subsequent clubhouse charades. To end the status quo, there was an overhaul in the front office. Now, the spotlight will shine brightly on general manager Ben Cherington...

You’re telling me there’s a salary cap in the new CBA?

I’ve complained in a few places about the Red Sox ownership not being willing to spend a little over the luxury tax threshold to complete this roster. I could rehearse here how offering David Ortiz arbitration is a very questionable decision if you’re treating the luxury tax threshold as a hard cap, but I’d rather talk about that hard cap in the first place. Why are the Sox...

Best trades in Red Sox history since 1990

In November 1997, SP Tony Armas Jr. and SP Carl Pavano were traded to the Expos for SP Pedro Martinez. Pedro went on to win 2 consecutive Cy Young awards in 1999 and 2000. He also was the best SP in baseball during those years. During the 1997 season SP Derek Lowe and C Jason Varitek were sent to the Red Sox for RP Heathcliff Slocumb who went to Seattle in one of the most lopsided...

The Red Sox are about to sign Cody Ross: Cody Ross agreed to sign with the Boston Red Sox, giving them an experienced hitter with postseason success on his resume to help replace J.D.
