Belt: Have bat, will travel. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn, Getty)
The San Francisco Giants have called up Brandon Belt from Triple-A Fresno for like the millionth time (it seems like anyway) and they've placed outfielder Andres Torres on the 15-day disabled list due to a bruised ego.... er, I mean shin.Still no word on Carlos Beltran, though. He is not in the Giants' starting lineup today against the Marlins, although he is listed as one of the "extras" on the lineup card. Beltran has a sore right hand or wrist (I still haven't heard definitively which one it is) and has missed the past week of action.
The Giants seem hesitant about putting Beltran in as a pinch hitter, pinch runner or defensive replacement. I'm guessing that's because if he does have to go on the DL (as has been speculated), they would not be able to make it retroactive to the last day he played, which was Sunday.
In 11 games with San Francisco, Beltran is hitting just .244 with no homers and two RBI.
Belt, meanwhile, has put on more Greyhound frequent rider miles than a washed up country singer.
The Giants' bright prospect has hit just .218 with two homers and seven RBIs in 31 games with San Francisco.
As for Torres? He's having one hell of a letdown season, batting just .228 with three homers, 18 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 85 games this year. A year ago, he was a surprising lift for the World Champs, batting .268 with 16 HR, 43 doubles, 68 RBI and 26 steals. There's no question that the Giants have become frustrated -- not only with Torres -- but with most of the regulars, who have yet to find their groove at the plate this season.
