The Atlanta Braves never seem to lose when Kris Medlen is their starting pitcher. They sure hope to extend his amazing streak for at least one more game. The Braves have won 23 consecutive games started by Medlen - a modern big league record. On Friday, he'll go in the inaugural wild-card playoff against the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The winner advances to face NL East champion Washington in the divisional round. The loser is done for the season. Medlen (10-1, 1.57 ERA) says he doesn't think much about the streak that began in 2010, except when reminded of it by the media. The Cardinals will counter with 16-game winner Kyle Lohse. If not for the new postseason format, St. Louis would have been watching from home.

Medlen, Braves hope streak continues in Wild Card

ATLANTA Kris Medlen cant really explain it. Neither can anybody else. All Medlen and his Braves teammates know is that they win when hes on the mound, something they hope will continue against the St. Louis Cardinals in Fridays National League Wild Card game (5:07 p.m.) at Turner Field. The Braves have won a MLB-record 23 consecutive starts by Medlen, a record once held by Hall...

Cardinals know Medlen will be tough

ATLANTA The Cardinals know the numbers. They know Braves starter Kris Medlen is 10-1 with a 1.57 ERA this season. They know hes 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA in 10 starts since rejoining the rotation. And yes, they are well aware that Atlanta has won the last 23 games the right-hander has started. The Cardinals also know what type of offense they have. Hes had a great run, you cant deny...

Medlen proves location trumps velocity

The most dominating pitcher in baseball came out of Santa Ana (Calif.) College as a switch-hitting shortstop and got a paltry 80,000 signing bonus as a 10thround pick. As of June, he was pitching in the minor leagues, stretching out his right arm to move from the bullpen to the starting rotation two years after Tommy John surgery. When he starts for the Atlanta Braves in their one...

Cardinals-Braves wild-card playoff preview

ATLANTA (AP) Break out the peanut butter and honey. Kris Medlen is ready for another start. Only this time, it's the biggest game of his career. The diminutive right-hander, who didn't even start the season in Atlanta's rotation, will deliver the first pitch in the inaugural wild-card playoff against the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Braves...

Braves have backups for Medlen on wild-card roster

The Atlanta Braves' roster for their wild-card game against St. Louis includes nine pitchers, including three starters. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says he wants to have Tim Hudson and Mike Minor available for Friday's game against the Cardinals in case Kris Medlen has unexpected problems in the bullpen. Right-hander Cristhian Martinez, who appeared in 54 games and often was...

Jumping Off the Walls from a One-Game Playoff

I like the extra wild card playoff. Obviously. My team (the reigning WORLD CHAMPIONS) are in because of it. But I am not a fan of the umpteen ulcers currently destroying my insides as we face a do or die situation against Kris Medlen and the Atlanta Braves. To prove it, I was going to post a picture of myself suffering from said anxiety before I realized that doing so would drive...

NL Wild Card preview: Cardinals vs Braves

The first wild card matchup on Friday will start at 5:07 PM, and will pit the 94-68 Atlanta Braves against the defending World Champion and 88-74 St Louis Cardinals. The game will be in Atlanta, in front of 50,000 screaming, tomahawk chopping Atlanta fans, where the Braves are 48-33 this season (including 12-3 in September). The Braves seem to be the favorite coming into the game...

2012 MLB Wild Card predictions

NL Wild Card Game: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves Kyle Lohse (Stl) 16-3, 2.86 ERA vs. Kris Medlen (Atl) 10-1, 1.57 ERA Both teams enter this game with pretty potent offenses, especially St. Louis who has recovered nicely from the loss of Albert Pujols in the offseason. Now led by Matt Holiday, Yadier Molina, Mr. October David Freese and Allen Craig the Cardinals can certainly...

Thursday news and notes

Well guys, the regular season is over. Fortunately for us, our boys were good enough to move on to the playoffs and play for a championship. We get to head to San Francisco to take on the Giants for two games beginning on Saturday before we head back home to finish out the series. Here are my picks in the wild card games Atlanta and Texas Kris Medlen has a 0.97 ERA as a starter this...

Wild Card Friday “Series” Previews, including an all-new playoff results simulator!

Tonight's games: St. Louis at Atlanta: Kyle Lohse, RHP (2.86, 3.51, 3.96) vs Kris Medlen, RHP (1.57, 2.42, 2.97), 4:07 PM CT It's hard to believe that Lohse has put up nearly 11 fWAR since the Cardinals picked him up off the scrap heap. I would say he's a member of the Wandy Rodriguez Hall [...]

NL Wild Card Matchup Preview

I, for one, am in favor of the 1 game Wild Card shootout.  It didn’t seem right that a Wild Card had the same rights and privileges of the Division winners (minus home field, which in baseball is minimal). Seemed like every other year, there’d be a Game 163 (to settle a regular season tie) that created a huge Game 7 feel right off the bat, really helped fans get in the October...

2012 Wild Card Previews

One game. Win, and enjoy home field advantage in the Division Series versus the number one seed in your league. Lose, and go home. This marks the first time in major league history where we have this type of format. Some love the idea, like myself. Others despise the idea of changing America’s past time. While everyone’s opinions differ, it is what it is and where in-store for...

Atlanta Braves become the first team to lose a Wild Card elimination game

For the 2012 season, MLB established two Wild Card teams in each league in order to make a one-game playoff and determine who will go to the Divisional Series. In the NL the Braves and Cardinals became the first teams ever to play the Wild Card elimination game. The game started off great for the Braves. Kris Medlen was outstanding mowing down Cardinals with his devastating change...
