The acquisition of Justin Upton is already paying dividends for the Atlanta Braves. On Friday night the outfielder connected on his third home run of the season providing all the offense the Braves needed in a win over the Chicago Cubs.
Upton bumped his average up to .308 after the home run. He also added a sacrifice fly and now has five RBI though the seasons first four games.
The Braves had Mike Minor on the mound and he was firing in his first start. Minor pitched 7 1/3 innings leaving the Cubs hapless for much up the night in racking up seven strikeouts. Minors only hiccup of the night came in the fifth inning when Scott Hairston hit a solo home run.
In the ninth inning Craig Kimbrel was called upon for his second save of the season, striking out one.
The Braves are now 3-1 on the season and have tied the Washington Nationals atop the NL East. The Cubs drop to 2-2 on the young season with the loss. The two teams will play again tomorrow with Carlos Villanueva (Cubs) and Juli...

Freeman’s bat will be missed
Braves hot-hitting first baseman Freddie Freeman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right oblique. The concern is that oblique injuries can often linger well beyond the initial diagnosis.
Freeman has been an anchor at the clean up spot so far this season, hitting .412 with 1 homer and 7 RBIs. He has provided valuable protection...
ATLANTA Taking three cuts after the Braves 4-1 win over the Cubs at Turner Field on Friday night.
1. Yes, He Is A Leadoff Hitter
The knock on Andrelton Simmons entering his first season atop the order was that he wasn't a prototypical leadoff man.
Last season the shortstop drew just 12 walks in 49 games, possessing a 6.6 rate that ranked 13th on the Braves. He had one stolen...
BJ Upton (left) and Justin Upton became the first brothers in major league history to homer to tie, then win a game Saturday against Cubs closer Carlos Marmol.
I mentioned earlier this week how Carlos Marmol has been absolutely dreadful for the Cubs.
Now he’s so bad he’s in the record books.
Marmol allowed the game-tying home run to B.J. Upton, then the walk-off winner to his...
The second straight Phils’ starter is crushed by the Braves’ offense, as the Phils dropped their second straight game, losing this time, 9-2.
The Braves jumped to a quick 2-o lead in the bottom of the first as, with a runner on first, and with one man out, Justin Upton hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the season, knocking in Jason Heyward, who had just singled...
The Atlanta Braves trailed the Chicago Cubs 5-1 entering the eighth inning of Saturday’s game. After scratching across three runs against Cubs reliever Kyuji Fujikawa in the eighth they unloaded on Carlos Marmol in the ninth.
B.J. Upton hit a game tying home run, moments later his younger brother hit his second home run of the night giving the Braves a thrilling 6-5 win.
Talk about good timing.
Braves rookie catcher Evan Gattis dug in for his second-career at-bat in the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies and future Hall of Famer Roy Halladay. What happened next was miraculous.
During the at-bat, Gattis’ father was being interviewed on live TV. His old man began talking about his son’s rough past (which included drug...
ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 2-0 loss to the Phillies on Thursday, before 18,295 bundled-up fans at soggy Turner Field:
1. The Braves' bats were no match for Cliff Lee and the c-c-cold temperatures
To be fair, very few MLB teams would have experienced success against Lee on this night.
In a performance more reminiscent of mid-May than early...

What might have been the biggest viewing audience for a live boxing match in human history got itself a good show Saturday, then it watched a win for its national hero.
From the standpoint of action in the ring, the most significant outcome on the Macau, China card that aired Saturday on HBO2 was flyweight Brian Viloria...
The Cubs somehow managed to scratch together enough runs to take a series from the Pirates. Now they head to relatively warm Atlanta for another three game set. Atlanta beat up on their aging divisional rivals, the Phillies in their opening series.
Here's how the teams looked in 2012. NL Ranks in parentheses.
